Best performance of season sees Greens fall short as Ionians Battle to the end.

Hull Ionians 19 Scunthorpe Colts 14

Late try sinks Colts over in East Yorkshire.

On Sunday October 20th, Scunthorpe Colts travelled to Hull Ionians in East Yorkshire. The team performance of the season so far, again was winless as the home side went ahead for the first time with only two minutes remaining. A cruel, cruel fate as the Greens deserved much better for their endeavours.
Scunthorpe received from the kick off in damp and breezy conditions and were soon in control of the game. Three good opening drives had them in the home side’s half but unfortunately the fourth was stolen and the early momentum disappeared. The highlight of the first ten minutes was a typical Archie Swain chip and chase and as per usual only illegal blocking could stop this livewire number nine. A couple of exciting runs from centre Ben Botham again were causing havoc with the home defence but unfortunately he had to retire on 12 minutes with a shin injury.
The kicking game of number 10 George Taylor and centre Jess Matthews always seemed to have the home side guessing, whether it was long kicks for territory or short attacking grubber kicks. On 16 minutes, a high attacking kick from Taylor was wonderfully chased by winger, Piers Sciolti. As he stole possession from his opposite number, the support play of number eight Kristian Martin was rewarded as he ran the final 25 yards to touch down. With captain Lewis Meyer in support, he drew the last man with a subtle dummy and side-step and powered his way over before the retreating Ionians’ defence could react. Superb play from both back-row forwards. An excellent conversion from Matty Boden made it 0 – 7. A lead fully deserved.
Learning from the visitors playing to the conditions, Ionians came back on 23 minutes. A kick through was knocked on by Scunthorpe and this gave them the chance to strike back. They trawled their way to the Greens’ line and, after a scrum win under the Greens post, they spun it wide right and slick passing saw them go over. Unconverted 5 – 7. More Taylor and Matthews inventive play and kicks nearly extended the Scunthorpe lead but the score remained 5 –7 at half time.
Scunthorpe again dominated the early exchanges of the second half and it was no surprise when the lead was extended on 48 minutes. A long clearance into Ionians half was chased down again by Sciolti and, as he halted the home defender, Matthews, chasing his own kick, was quickly on hand to help. As the ball came loose, Matthews hacked the ball forward, and there was only to be one winner as he outsprinted the Ionians’ fullback in a chase to the ball over 30 yards. A Matthews try and Boden conversion made it now 14 – 5 to the visitors.
In the last fifteen minutes, the visitors were dealt some harsh refereeing decisions which brought the home side back into the game An example being when a penalty kick from Boden hit the post and was then knocked on by Ionians and picked up by another Ionians’ player in an offside position, but nothing was given. Holding firm on their own line, the Greens conceded only when a crossfield kick, after countless drives, allowed the Ionians’ winger to gather and score. So with the conversion and ten minutes to go, the score was 14- 12.
No matter what they did, in the last ten, they had no possession and eventually the Greens would suffer. A cruel try with two minutes to go, with the conversion, made it 14-19 and no real time to come back..
Man of the match went to Number eight Kristian Martin and the pick of the backs was Piers Sciolti. Other noteworthy performances were from captain Lewis Meyer, prop Jon Rigby, Second Row Israel Spry-Brittain and centre Jess Matthews, all of whom did not deserve to be on a losing side.
