Prima Cup 2018

A very early start to the day was made by the Under 10’s to the Prima Cup tournament where the ultimate prize is to play at the Leicester Tigers ground, Welford Road.
Five games were played by the team the first being against Lutterworth where we showed our true skills at passing the ball down the line. Quibell, EDWARD both managed scores before half time however a further three trys were gained by Conroy, PHILIP and EDWARD leaving Lutterworth with a 5-0 defeat.
The second game didn’t go to plan however with our only defeat of the day against Bedford Blues. Bedford got the first score in the first few minutes but Stow scraped one back with some excellent passing between Wilkinson and Thornton. Bedford gained their feet to score one back however a missed tackle by the opposition allowed Carter to pass out to Conroy to run the pitch and score. It was still even at half time but despite us putting in the tackles and fighting for the ball, Bedford picked up on a loose ball and score in the final minutes when last play was called.
Next came Market Bosworth who were short on players so kindly PHILIP offered to play for the opposition. We got off to a good start with Wilkinson stealing the ball and passing off to CASEY however Bosworth managed to get one on the scoresheet. Conroy got penalised for coming off his feet in the ruck and a forward pass gave them the ball to score in the corner. Swift passing between Carter to Clarke via Thornton and CASEY didn’t prevent Bosworth stealing the ball from a ruck and them scoring again.
Carter managed to pick up a lose ball from a tackle and popped it out to EDWARD who was tackled 3 metres from the line. Conroy grabbed the ball to put the score in followed up by another highlight where Stow got the ball from the scrum then slipped whilst throwing it wide to Clarke to score. The end result of 2 -2 draw didn’t reflect the determination and skill that was shown on the pitch by the Scunthorpe lads.
Next up came Leicester Lions who did look intimidatlng in numbers of players they brought however this didn’t deter us. Conroy opened up the scoring but this was matched by the opponents. Carter came next to score after Conroy ripped the ball from their player passed out to Stow via Quibell and then another came from Stow who got tackled, did a quick 360 spin to get out of their grasp and score one of his own.
Philip then grabbed a loose ball passing over the Clarke who slipped and popped the ball up to Stow who ran the pitch to score.
The Lions still had some left in the tank as they pulled two back however we did well to get a 4-3 win result.
The last game of the day against Loughborough against some extremely tall Under 10’s was not match for us. We got off to a fab start with Conroy tackling their tallest lad who dropped the ball which was grabbed by Stow to score. Loughborough fought back making it one all however a last surge saw Stow grab another score with a great pass Edward via Clarke and then our last one scored by Carter after Conroy pinched the ball from their player. A great win of 3-1 ended a fantastic day out.
The overall game scores are only part of the scoring system as teamwork, support, players and parents behaviour are all given scores to make up the overall winning team of the day. If Scunthorpe manage to get through, there will be another round of games to play before the overall prize is awarded. Come on Scunthorpe Under 10’s !!!!!
