They say days like these are good for character building for everyone involved from players through to parents and coaches. I think we can all vouch for that. Thanks to Ionians for coming and sharing what was probably the worst weather our lads have played in but fair enough, players from both sides got stuck in and did their best. It was ideal for sticking it up your jumper and having a trundle up the field but they tried their best to put some passes together (well done to Forey-Hicken for the best passing on both teams) Ionians are a solid side with some strong runners and we’ll look forward to catching up with them again at the festivals later on in the season. We played two games today. Ionians won the first. We won the second but to be honest the scores didn’t matter.
We had a squad of 13 today and rotated them all constantly. They included Evers, Pooley, Szynal, Barnard, Carmichael, Batley, Atkinson, Giles, Barrett, Penn, Fell, Forey-Hicken and Dunk.
Game 1: Scunthorpe 10 – 12 Ionians
We got off to a good start with tries coming from Giles (2) Pooley (2) Dunk (1) and Atkinson (1) We tried our best to put some passes together with some good ones coming off meaning we went into half time 6-4 up. The second half saw Ionians hit back with a good few themselves. We managed to keep in it with Pooley (2) Atkinson (1) and Evers (1) all getting over the whitewash. However they had too much in the locker and just won in the end.
Game 2: Scunthorpe 5 - 4 Ionians
We played a shortened game in game 2 as they were starting to get cold. It was another close one but this time we managed to sneak it. Barrett (2) Pooley (2) and Atkinson (1) all scored. It was a difficult day for tagging with only a couple of times turnovers were won by getting 6 tags in a row.
Tagger of the week was claimed by Barrett. Player of the week went to Szynal for a great attitude throughout and the effort he puts in at training. Well done all lets try and keep it going. Next Sunday we’re away at Sheffield Tigers who only have an under 7s and under 8s team.
