We had Sandal of Wakefield at our place today in another return fixture. They play a similar style like Old Brods last week, very direct and with good support. Our passing was probably the best it had been all season with all lads really making an effort to catch and pass on the hoof. We started well but faded as the day went on. Numbers were excellent as we had 15 playing out of the squad of 16. Aiden Phillips made his debut and looks like a good prospect – well done Aiden!
Game 1: Scunthorpe 9 – 7 Sandal
We came out the blocks well, ran good lines, passed the ball and made our tags. Szynal and Gillespie really showed the others how to do it with some great work in attack and defence. It was good to have Gillespie back who was playing his first game in 2 months and he opened the scoring with a bullocking run up the middle of the park. Szynal added a second with some nifty footwork. Atkinson and Bayley made their weekly bust up the touchline to get their names on the score sheet. We went into half time 4-3 up and swopped the teams over. The second team followed the first and really took the game to the opposition. Pooley scored 4 quality tries with a mixture of pace, power and footwork to leave Sandal trailing in his wake. Barrett scored a great try after a nice break and pass from Pooley. Batleys tagging meant we won a number of turnovers and claimed a solid win in the end.
Game 2: Scunthorpe 5 – 5 Sandal
Sandal started to pick up the pace themselves but we were still on it in most areas of play however the tagging started to drop a bit. Atkinson made a break and put in a nice pass to the ever present Dunk who dotted down but it was the only try of the half meaning we went into half time 3-1 down. Team 2 came on and really went for it. Pooley led from the front and scored 2 ably supported by Barrett (1) and Bayley (1) This teams tagging and passing was awesome and they blew Sandal away winning the second half 4-2 resulting in a draw overall
Game 3: Scunthorpe 4 – 6 Sandal
Team 1 who were playing the first half of each game started to tire now and struggled to make inroads. Fair play to Sandal they put us to the sword and totally kept us out but managed 4 scores themselves. We had a few opportunities but a dropped ball here and there together with Sandals hunger to win the 50/50s meant we went into half time 4-0 down. Team 2 came on and really did the business as they had done all day. Tries came from Carmichael, Bayley, Penn and Fell which was his best of the season with a tremendous weaving effort from the half way line. They kept to the task well and restricted Sandal to only 2 scores of their own. However it wasn’t enough in the end and we went down 6-4.
All games were played in a good spirit and we’ll look forward to going to the Sandal festival in 2 weeks time. Batley picked up tagger of the week, Fell claimed player of the week. Next up Sheffield away which will be a tough one as they are the best team we have played in the last 2 years.
