With the weather due to be a very mixed bag today, The Green U8’s were playing hosts to Market Rasen. With a few new players raring to go, and our regulars wanting to continue their run of form, the boys were in good spirit under the occasional breaks in the cloud. The coaches decided we would split the lads into two teams with each playing one half of each game.
1st half - With a starting 7 of; Fell, Bailey, Pooley, Donskoy, Barratt, Philips and Dunk, the guests got us under way. The first 10 seconds of the half set the tone of the game, and unfortunately the tone wasn’t very good for the Greens. From the off a succession of missed tags allowed Market Rasen get a very easy first try. However, the Greens got us going again and very quickly pulled it back. After a number of turn over’s, including some sloppy passing, by the usually accurate Greens, it was the visitors who went into half time the happier of the two. The Greens – 3, Market Rasen – 4.
2nd half – The boys coming onto the field (Synal, Giles, Evers, Barnard, Carmicheal, Penn, Batley and Sowerby) were given a brief, positive team talk before getting us under way. This was going to be a half the boys will want to forget very quickly. The Greens failed make a strong attempt at getting forward with ball, which was turned over time and time again. The visitors danced through the defence with relative ease and ended up with a very commanding 3-9 victory.
1st half – After having an inspiring talk the Greens got us off the start they so desperately wanted! With some fantastic passing, even better tagging the Greens found themselves 3-0 up within the first few minutes thanks to back to back tries from Bailey. The visitors soon rallied together but this wasn’t quite good enough to pull it back, the first half ended with the lads 4-3 up.
2nd half – More of the same from the Greens saw them clinch their first win of the day! 4 tries from 4 different scorers and some brilliant tagging from the two Thomas’s saw the boys come out deserved winners! Try of the game coming from some quick passing from Batley who delivered a pass which was expertly taken by Giles who sprinted through a gap in the defence to make it 5-3. Some brilliant pressure from the home side forced Market Rasen into touch on a couple of occasions. With the debutant Sowerby getting more and more involved in the play it was his mazy 20 foot dash which helped set up another brilliant try for the Greens. Final score – The Greens – 8, Market Rasen – 6.
1st half – With the boys clearly now hitting the throttle, it was brilliant to watch them make full advantage of the prevailing weather. With try after try in the... VERY heavy hail, the boys came out on top 5-2. The first game was, by now, a distant memory. The boys were passing quickly after being tagged, rallying together in defence (notably Pooley and Donskoy), supporting each other all across the pitch and making some brilliant runs with the ball!
2nd half – The 2nd half was one of attacking play from both teams as the ball was turned over a lot less. With tries coming from Evers and Penn amongst others and Carmicheal going from strength to strength throughout the Greens came out on top 11-8!
All in all a mixed bag of performances and weather led to an eventful morning in which Tagger of the week went to the consistent Synal with Sowerby picking up player of the week.
