Old Brods Fest Champs

The under 8s were at the Old Brods Festival in Halifax today for their last game of the season and last game of tag ever before we go into contact next season. It proved to be a memorable day for us all as the lads teamed up brilliantly to win every game and win the cup final. We won this tournament as under 7s last year so it holds some good memories for us. We had 11 available and everyone scored which I don’t think has ever happened in these last 2 seasons so we went out with a bang. Looking back though it was our aggressive rush defence that won us the cup, it just got better and better as the day went on. We managed to pressure the opposition into mistakes so making our attacks much easier. The team talk was simple – lads do you want to win a cup today or what?! The answer was YES!!! Here’s what happened-
Game 1: Scunthorpe 9 – 6 Old Brods
We started well. Giles and Atkinson got two tries each with Evers, Batley, Bayley, Philips and Donskoy all weighing in with one each. Attack was great. Defence was ok but overall a good start to the day.
Game 2: Scunthorpe 7 – 6 Old Brods
This was a good close game against the other Old Brods team and could have gone either way to be fair. Giles got the winning try with the last play of the game and by now we were starting to hope that something pretty cool could happen today. Penn and Atkinson got two tries. Bayley and Sowerby got the others.
Game 3: Scunthorpe 5 – 1 Old Rish
Our defence was really starting to come together now. The lads hunted in packs of 2 or 3 and didn’t give the opposition chance to breathe. The Old Rish coach said he had seen nothing like it in his last 2 seasons of tag and had nothing but praise for our boys which was a nice touch. Atkinson got 2, Szynal, Giles and Batley one each.
Game 4: Scunthorpe 9 – 2 Bradford & Bingley
The defence picked up to a new level again and we only let B&B out their half twice in the whole game which was for 2 breakaways. We just went at them constantly for 10 mins. I was really pleased with the way they didn’t take their foot off it which would have been easy to do. We scored almost every time we got the ball. The lads knew they were in the cup final now.
Game 5: Scunthorpe 7 – 6 Sandal
So we won our pool unbeaten and Sandal had won the other pool unbeaten which set up a tasty cup final encounter. They’re a good set of lads and coaches. We’ve got to know them quite well as this was our fourth meeting of the season. All have been close games and this was no different. What won it for us was how we went off like cut snakes both in attack and defence and got to 5-2 up at one stage. Credit to Sandal though they came back at us like we knew they would. Giles, Bayley and Atkinson got 2 each and Barnard got 1. Sandal kept coming though and we were out on our feet at the end but just hung on for a fantastic win.
Brilliant lads well done we’re all so proud of you. Every one of them could have been tagger or player of the week but Batley ended up with tagger and Penn with player. And so that’s it for this season. Awards presentation day is Saturday 10 May at the club which will be a quality day out for everyone - players, parents and coaches - where we might have a couple of cheeky lemonades!
