Scunthorpe U8’s again travelled away this weekend to Sheffield with 12 players a good mix of the old and new. The twelve players were split into two teams one largely made up of the more experienced and the other of the new.

Scunthorpe Vets v Sheffield
Scunthorpe started brightly with some fine play that saw C Brewster scoring his first of the day, on the restart the greens put vital pressure on Sheffield that forced them into knocking on, from the resulting hand over C Brewster scored again. Sheffield managed to work their way through the Scunthorpe defence to pull one score back. Defensively both teams showed great determination causing a stalemate for some time that ended in an infringement by Scunthorpe giving Sheffield chance to even the scores up. For the first time in the game Sheffield took the lead, Scunthorpe strung together a great passage of play with most of the team touching the ball that cumulated in Conroy scoring his first of the day. Sheffield scored from the restart to regain the lead to which Conroy returned the favour leaving the final score at 4 all
Two more games were played by the vets both with winning score lines of 5 – 2 and 4 – 2 with C Brewster scoring 5, Conroy 6, Murr 2.
Scunthorpe Newbies v Sheffield
Scunthorpe not yet used to travelling allowed an easy score for Sheffield, after the restart a quickly released ball saw Smith weave his way through and score in the corner. Sheffield kicked off with pace and direction that saw Scunthorpe frozen to the spot letting in another soft try. B Howden received the ball as first receiver and showed some real pace to fly through the defence and score. Scunthorpe looking like they were waking up showed some real determination to hold Sheffield for so long before allowing three tries in. Scunthorpe finished the game with a flurry seeing Smith score again and Howden finishing the game off.
Two more games both at losses with scores of 5 – 3 and 5 – 3 with Smith scoring 5, B Howden 4, Dawson 1.
A great weekend for the boys with a vast improvement on previous week’s games, we are looking forward to this week’s training session where we can work on improving our team working.
