The Greens losing the toss were forced on to the defence from the kick off but soon achieved a turnover ball and with some good interplay by this less experienced side opened the scoring through a debut try for Kai Green. With a cold wind blowing the young green hands were struggling to get hold of the Grimsby Tags which eventually saw Grimsby equalise. Going forward the greens were playing well and good support play saw Max Bradwell score his debut try to give the greens a half time lead 2 tries to 1.
At the start of the second half a planned move by the greens saw them switch play quickly for Max Bradwell to almost reach the try line before offloading the ball to Jake Helliwell to get his debut try and extend the greens lead. The greens then appeared to lose concentration probably because of the cold weather allowing Grimsby to break through to pull a score back. The remainder of the game saw some good interplay but just being stopped short by a good Grimsby defence to give a full time score of 3 tries to 2 to the Greens.
It was a good game by Scunthorpe with 3 debutant scorers in the game.
With some of the more experienced players feeling unwell and the effects of the cold weather the final game saw a mixture of players take to the field. A good run by Brett Howden saw the ever supportive Ben Conroy open the scoring at the start of the second game. Good pressure from the green defence forced a drop ball by Grimsby which Ben Conroy collected broke through and fed a good pass well collected by Morgan Williams to score the greens second try to lead 2 tries to nil at half time.
Good tagging by the greens forced a knock on by Grimsby which from the tap off saw Brett Howden break through from inside his own half to score a well taken try. Further good interplay by the greens with nearly all the players touching the ball finally saw Alex Dawson finish off a great Scunthorpe move. As time ticked away the Greens defence was finally broken as Grimsby crossed the line for a consolation try.
Full Time: Scunthorpe 4 Grimsby 1
Grimsby must be praised for turning up and fulfilling a fixture for both of the Greens under 7’s and 8’s with only a small number of players available.
