Scunthorpe 1 – 2 Hull Ionians
This week the Under 9’s played host to Hull Ionians, and as always the games were tough and gritty! The team was well stocked which meant that we could play two teams within the 3 games hoping that the fresh legs would prove to have the upper hand on a fairly slim attended Ionians team, however this was not the case as Ionians played a very good passing game right from the off, which put the Greens on the back foot. Their tackling and pressure in the defensive line was also a bit better to be fair.
The first half of the first game, had Ionians out playing the Greens resulting in a half time score of 1-4 for Hull, with the only try for the Greens scored by Pooley, who proved to be a key factor for the Greens throughout the day. The second half of the game the Greens fared better with tries from Atkinson (1), Gillespie (1) and Giles (2) however it wasn’t enough and Ionians won with an overall score of 7-5.
The pattern that was set out during the first game continued into the second, however by now the Greens were beginning to find their fight and the tackling became stronger. Again we played two teams over the two halves and the Greens saw tries from Pooley (1), Barrett (1), Gillespie (1) and Atkinson (3). Unfortunately we could still not see them off and again Ionians won 8-6.
By the third game it seemed as though the boys had finally found not just their tackles but also their legs with some lovely runs from Pooley (3), Atkinson (2) and Gillespie (1) this coupled with all of the boys desire to stop the Ionians heading home with a hat trick saw an overall better game giving the Greens a deserved 6-5 win. Defence was better and that was the key. Hopefully the lads will start to realise that its defence that wins games and without that, it’s difficult to do anything going forwards. Tackler of the week was Cohen. Player of the week was Pooley.
