The under 9s were at the annual Driffield Festival today with the other Scunthorpe teams from the mini section. The weather was as you’d expect at Driff but thankfully Letoreys dad provided a great tent for us all to enjoy. Here’s what happened:
Game 1: Scunthorpe 5 – 1 Malton
The warm up and practice was dodgy to say the least but as soon as we took to the field, that was all forgotten about as we got on with business. We scored 2 early tries, conceded one but then went on to score 3 more. Defence was great which gave us the opportunity to attack. Giles was leading the attacking line with some lovely aggressive running and Atkinson leading the defensive line making hit after hit.
Game 2: Scunthorpe 4 – 1 Hull Ionians
We carried on where we left off from the Malton game and made some great tackles in defence which lead to some lovely tries from Penn, Barrett, Atkinson & Giles. Nice touch from the Ionians coach who complimented us on our play.
Game 3: Scunthorpe 1 – 1 Pocklington
This was a good hard game of rugby with defence on top all the way through. Both sides were evenly matched and the draw was the right result. We got one try early on but Pock came back and got the equalizer on the final whistle which they deserved to be fair. No problems though as we had won our group so went through to the semi final.
Semi Final: Scunthorpe 5 – 3 Beverley
Beverley were our opponents in the semis. They had been outstanding in their group winning all 3 games convincingly. However we got stuck in to them. Dunk, Chapman & Fell put in some good solid tackles, ably supported by Donskoy & Sowerby while Marritt was making the hard yards up the middle. We conceded early but then went on to score 3 of our own. With a couple of minutes remaining we conceded again which set up a tense finale. Atkinson put in a big but legitimate tackle on a Bev lad which unfortunately resulted in him being taken away in an ambulance. We hope he is ok. This spurred the Bev lads on and they equalised on the final whistle. We then went into extra time and really got our act together scoring 2 unanswered tries, the pick of them from Letorey who weaved some magic from halfway to go over. We were now in the final.
Final: Scunthorpe 0 -5 Goole
We never got going in the final. It just seemed to be a step too far and we were deservedly well beaten by a good Goole side. No excuses. It was just one of them but we can be really proud of ourselves today in what was horrendous conditions come the end. We kept doing our best all the way. And the tent stayed in tact! So runners up in the final game of our first season tackling. Well chuffed with everyone. Thanks to all parents and supporters who help us to field at least one team every week and usually two. It’s a good effort. Training Wednesday night and Sunday morning then that’s us done for the season. Presentation is on Sunday 31 May times to be confirmed. Cheers all it’s been emotional as always!
