Great Spirit shown by the Hull Ionians as one team took on both of our teams. The first match result 5, 3 to Scunthorpe. With a fantastic display of good hard tackles from both teams but particularly the young greenies. In the first half some great passing between Waldron and Hart but the Ionians defence held strong and after picking up a loose ball the Ionians stormed down the pitch to score their first try. A further 2 tries followed for the Ionians as Scunthorpe struggled with their defence lines. Scunthorpe’s first try came from Grundy as he picked up a loose ball and took it over the line. The Ionians continued to attack but Scunthorpe now had their defence line in order and there was no getting through. Quibell putting in a fantastic tackle to force the opposition out of touch just short of their try line denying them their fourth try. Scunthorpe’s second try came from Hart just before half time. The second half started with a great run up the line by Frary but he was tackled out of touch so no score. From the restart a poor pass gave Wilkinson the opportunity to grab the ball and he put in an excellent pass to Hart who took the ball down the pitch to score the 3rd try for Scunthorpe. Persistent tackling by Hatfield, Waldron, Wilkinson and Grundy gave Scunthorpe the ball back for Proctor to take it down the line and score. Scunthorpe’s fifth try followed quickly for Hart to finish the game 5, 3.
The second match started quickly with a flurry of tackles from Stow, Conroy and Carter gaining a turnover ball near our tryline. Handling errors allowed Hull to gain the ball back however Conroy managed to scoop up a loose ball and run the pitch to get Scunthorpe their first try.
This was followed by a second try where Jones I ran down the wing following a second turnover ball. The team were unstoppable with their tackles from Carter, Jones I and Stow.
With each side fighting to make progress up the pitch, a knock forward by Hull allowed Bycroft the ball with quick pass out to Thornton via Carter and out to Stow who managed to get the ball over the line.
Despite being blown for a high tackle, Scunthorpe managed to gain the ball allowing Conroy to make a run over the line which was quickly followed up with another try from Stowe.
The slippy muddy pitch failed to stop the team from giving a good show their tackling was consistent and they dominated the whole game. More excellent tackling was seen from Carter, Clark and Jones I with a pass out to Thornton who barged his way over the line with an unstoppable try.
Hull managed to sneak a score due to another high tackle being called against Scunthorpe but this didn’t deter the teams momentum as Stowe with the help of Conroy managed to force them into touch and passing the ball out to Clark however the ball interception by Hull was short-lived as they dropped the ball allowing Carter to scoop it up and take it over the line. The final score of 7:1 just highlighted the determination of the Scunthorpe team and their desire to work together to produce an enjoyable winning performance.
Both the home teams played really well and were undefeated albeit extremely muddy!
