The Green team started off well with tackles being stuck in to gain 3 turnover balls in the first half of the first game. A loose ball scooped up by Quibell was passed out to Bycroft via Thornton for a try but quickly matched by the opponents.
Jones I and Conroy kept the tackle momentum allowing Jones I to get another try down. An excellent run down the pitch by Proctor failed to get his try after being forced into touch just before half time.
The second half went all the Greens way with another turnover ball due to landing six tackles in a row with Thornton, Grundy and Jones K working hard. Nearing the try line, Sheffield gained the ball due to a Scunthorpe high tackle however this was short lived as a Sheffield player dropped the ball and a quick thinking Proctor dived on it to get the score.
A further turnover ball with tackles being put in by Frary, Jones I, Jones K, Quibell and Conroy still didn’t stop Sheffield trying to fight back however in the last play, Thornton grabbed a loose ball and fought his way over the line to score. First game ended with a 4-1 win to Scunthorpe.
The Greens second match didn’t go as smoothly as their first. Having loaned Sheffield a player, Thornton and Conroy tackled relentlessly but to no avail allowing Sheffield a score however this was followed up with Conroy grabbing a score for himself but getting injured in the process.
Sheffield fought back and a couple of missed tackles due to a Tigers player giving a dummy pass gave them a second score on the sheet.
The second half was not going to plan with some missed tackles and high tackle calls against us, Sheffield bagged themselves another score. With 5 minutes to go, a valiant effort was shown by Frary , Jones I and Jones K but Frary was forced into touch giving the opponents the ball. The Greens couldn’t pull it back and a further high tackle decision against the Greens allowed Sheffield the ball with their dummy pass being pulled out of the hat getting them their last score of the day. A twist of fate with a Sheffield player giving a forward pass Thornton passed wide to Jones K who managed to sneak through and get a final score for Scunthorpe however it was not enough before the whistle ending the game with a defeat at 4-3.
The first game for the Black team did not go to plan at all with a final score of 6 for the Tigers and 1 for Scunthorpe. Despite good passing through the team for the whole game, Hart, Clark, and Hatfield were denied tries on 4 occasions as they were forced into touch. Our only try came from Stowe in the second half following a great run from him through the field. We were also penalised for high tackles but not being deterred Waldron, Clark, Sitek, and Hart continued relentlessly to put in some good clean tackles.
Not to be disheartened the Black team were back to form for their second game and delivered a fast pace game, to score 10 tries to Tigers 3. The game started with a try from Stowe following a great long pass from Hart across the field. Try after try followed quickly for each of the teams in turn from the restarts ending the first half Scunthorpe 4, Tigers 3. Scunthorpe had all the tries in the second half from Stowe, Clark, Carter, Hart and Barnbrook.
Both teams played well with some brilliant defence skills on display with every player showing they have no fear to get into those tackles.
