Sharpness made the trip to Star on Saturday missing 6 players from last season's championship winning team. Most notably was top scorer Ben John who hopefully should be back next week. New signings Nathan Freeman, Craig Nodes & Sam Greenland from the bench made their league debuts for the Sharks.
The game started with Sharpness on the attack and Star struggled to get into the Sharpness half. On 10 minutes Captain Ben Gibbs slotted the ball through the Star defence to play in Marley Thomas and he made no mistake slotting the ball under the Star keeper. It continued to be a one sided affair but on 40 minutes a missed timed back pass let the Star forward in to make in 1-1 at half time.
It was going to be very important that Sharpness started the second half brightly and they did just that. On 50 minutes Brad Hewer rounded 2 players in midfield and launched a thunderbolt strike from 25 yards giving the Star keeper no chance. This goal seemed to kill off any resistance from Star and goals and chances were created and converted at will.
Nathan Freeman, Ben Gibbs, James Priday and Mitch Malshanskyj were outstanding in defence and new signing Craig Nodes was dominant in midfield alongside Tom Frankham and Brad Hewer. Man of the match Marley Thomas was causing the Star defence all sorts of problems and it was him that made it 3-1 on 60 minutes once again slotting home when one on one with the keeper.
That was quickly followed by 3 more superbly worked goals from Matt Gardner, Jack Higgs and debutant Nodes.
Star were gifted a consolation goal in the 86 minute which made the score line 6-2 to Sharpness on the full time whistle.
With 5 first team medal winners becoming available for selection this Saturday against local rivals Cam it means a selection headache for manager Phil Orsborn but a headache most managers would be happy to have. However the Sharks will be missing Ryan Collard, knee ligament & Tom Paterson, broken leg long term and we wish them all the best in their recovery.
