Shaw Cross Sharks U16 girls v Illingworth U16 girls
1st June 2019
We were visited today by Illingworth girls. We had played them in the pre-season friendlies and knew from this that they are an able and strong team and that we had to play well to get a result.
Illingworth kicked off and showed straight away that, if anything, they had improved since we last met.
This was proven after just 3 minutes when they scored the first points of the match.
This woke the Sharks up like a bucket of water over the head and we responded with some very good passing and hard tackles.
There was no further scoring before the break but there had been opportunities for both teams
HT Sharks 0- 4 Illingworth
Sharks kicked off the second half and immediately pulled the scores level with a good try from Lauren Mowatt.
Sharks had most of the possession now with Illingworth making rare visits to the Sharks half.
A great kick from Courtney Marsh on 35 minutes split the Illingworth defensive line but they recovered to hold the Shark girls back.
3 minutes after this Illingworth were penalised on their 10 yard line and a great set of passed from one wing to the other saw Lydia Fawkes add 4 points to the total.
All the pressure was soaked up by Illingworth after this with the Sharks going close to scoring at least 3 times.
Illingworth had 2 more good attempts with the Illingworth number 10 making 2 strong runs but being brought down by the Sharks full back, Courtney Marsh, on both occasions.
FT Sharks 8 Illingworth 4
A hard fought, low scoring game. Both teams played good attacking rugby and both had excellent defences.
The proverbial immovable object meeting the irresistible force!
Next game is away at Thatto Heath on the 8th June
Come on Sharks!
