Brian M Clarke
It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Brian Clarke, aged 77 years, passed away on Friday 4th June at 1.30pm in Chesterfield Royal Infirmary, after a long and brave struggle against dementia and Liver cancer.
Brian or “Clarkey” as he was affectionately known, a Vice President of the club, moved to Sheffield from his native Scotland in 1966 and joined Sheffield RUFC as an athletic No 8, making numerous 1st & 2nd team appearances before an eye injury curtailed his rugby career.
Clarkey quickly made himself an integral part of the rugby club making many friends and more importantly drinking pals, and frequented most of the cities hostelries, but in particular the Bell Hagg along with the original “S10 Mafia “who included Messrs Firth, Ball, Ashcroft, Smith, Moulson et al. He also met with his numerous golf friends in The Rising Sun on Abbey Lane including Robbo, Gilruth, Dean, Walmsley, Vaughan, Gilbert, Proctor, Wheat, Chalky White et al.
Clarkey was lucky enough to have had two understanding lovely ladies in his life: Andrea his first wife, and his second wife Glenys, whom he did not surprisingly meet in The Rising Sun, and who loved and looked after him until he sadly passed away on Friday.
Those of us fortunate to have known Clarkey will have many special memories of the times spent in his company, both at home and abroad.
