Bill Reichwald's memories of David Sempers

David Sempers.

We first met David and Angie when we came to Sheffield way back when. He was then Captain of the club and was a fine full back.
He and Angie became good friends with our parents, and so Andy and I have always had a place in our hearts for Semps.

He was a gentleman of great integrity. Every role he had, he did to the best of his ability. He was utterly reliable , always good company and was a fabulous servant of the club.

His natural charm smoothed many difficult paths and he can be the only captain of the club who has walked in front of the team bus, in the fog to show the driver the way home ( Those were the days !)

He may also have been the only President to have been seen in a hotel near Plymouth in his club blazer and sporting a pair of black stockings ( part of a forfeit he admirably embraced ).

We beat Plymouth Albion on the Saturday and Exeter on the Monday .
He was a huge help to me in my years of captaincy and was always there with an encouraging word for everybody.

His other love was golf and he was also Captain of Abbeydale Golf club. He played that game with the same commitment, style and sportsmanship as his rugby.

His latter years were tinged with sadness as he nursed Angie through her terminal illness and then was cruelly struck with a form of dementia . He survived another ten years and despite his situation one could still occasionally see the twinkle in the eye of the younger, much loved Semps.

Our condolences go to the whole family of which David was so proud and the club has lost a marvellous man who made his mark wherever he went.

As kind and honest a gentleman as you could wish to meet.

He will be mourned and missed by many .

Bill Reichwald
