Sheffield took on league leaders and near neighbours, Sheffield Tigers for the second time this season and having pushed the Tigers all the way at Dore Moor hoped to put that late defeat and disappointment behind them. Sheffield took the field without the services of Jonny France for a second week, but nevertheless with a good team. The weather was absolutely appalling, with heavy rain and desperately cold, which was to the benefit of neither team.
Tigers got the early advantage, with a penalty converted by ex-Sheffield fly half, Mark Ireland to lead by 3 points to nil. The battle then raged much as it had in the match back in September, with neither side able to break the deadlock, until the 33rd minute, when Sheffield second row, Dave Clayden found himself in the sin bin for interfering at the breakdown on Sheffield's 5 metre line. two minutes later Tiger were awarded a try when scrum half Ryan Holmes was adjudged by the referee to have scored near the post. Mark Ireland added the conversion and Tigers went into half time with a 10 point to nil advantage.
The second half was no less combative than the first, but it was to be Sheffield who broke the deadlock on 55 minutes, when left wing and former Tigers player, Gareth Morley crashed over wide out on the left to score a try for Sheffield. Joe Cribley added a superb conversion from near the touch line and Sheffield were back in the mix, behind by only 7 points to 10. However, the game of rugby can be very cruel, and a break way try on 69 minutes wide out on the right by former Sheffield player, Liam Wallace, saw Tigers push their lead out to 8 points. Mark Ireland's conversion was just a magnificent as was Joe Cribley's a few minutes earlier and the lead was 10 points at 7 points to 17. Sheffield battled back hard and deserved to at least get a loosing bonus point out of the contest, but credit to Sheffield Tiger defence which remained firm a repulsed several very positive insertions from Sheffield and managed to avoid giving away even a penalty, which would have secured the bonus point. A magnificent game played in diabolical conditions, with Tigers edging the contest.
