For the first match of 2018 following the Christmas and New Year break, Sheffield travelled to Stourbridge in the distant West Midlands. Sheffield saw Andy Hodgson come in at outside centre for Jamie Pearson and the return of Rupert Broadley on the right wing, with Gareth Morley dropping to the bench. In the pack Tommy Marples dropped to the bench for Ben Whitney to start ay loose head prop, with Joe Cooke giving way on the bench to Sam Graham to return. Connor Mitchell also dropped to the bench to give Thulani Kuyumani his first start. The squad is still without the services of Tom Womack, Jonny France, Ryan Seabright and Ianto Jones.

Following on from the dramatic win over Tigers at Christmas and the week off at new year, Sheffield's trip to far off Stourbridge for the first time since the year 2000 in the 1999-2000 season, when Sheffield lost 53 - 3, seemed s daunting prospect, and so it was to prove. Stourbridge, playing on their new artificial pitch, kicked off, Steve Depledge returned the kick and Stourbridge's backs immediately on the attack and with less than 2 minutes gone had scored through their full back, Joe Heatley. Fly half, Chris Scott failed to add the conversion, but Stourbridge led by 5 points to nil. Sheffield managed a mini recovery and were rewarded with a kickable penalty on 5 minutes, which Steve Depledge despatch to reduce the lead to 5 points to 3. Sheffield continued to battle hard and kept the scoreboard and Stourbridge quiet, until that is a confrontation on Sheffield's 22 after 19 minutes, which led to both Dominic Parsons and Stourbridge's prop, Mark George were sent to the sin bin. The referee decided a scrum was appropriate, with the put in to Stourbridge from which they mounted an attack from which their hooker, Jack Lea scored out on the right. Chris Scott missed the conversion and Stourbridge led by 10 points to 3 after 21 minutes. However, from the restart Sheffield took immediate control. They recovered the kick off and Steve Depledge's little chip over the top found Fergus Wood on the charge to recover the kick and score in the corner. Steve Depledge added the conversion, to tie the scores at 10 points all.

Sheffield were straight back on the attack from the kick off and a break from outside centre, Andy Hodgson and then Fergus Wood, saw the ball handed on to wing, Rupert Broadley. to score close to the posts. Steve Depledge added the conversion again and Sheffield led by 17 points to 10 after 28 minutes. However, almost immediately from the kick off we saw second row Dave Clayden sent to the sin bin. Stourbridge kicked to the corner and manufactured a score through their number 8, Tom Dodd. Chris Scott added his first conversion and the scores were tied again, this time at 17 points all after 31 minutes. Sheffield now felt the full force of Stourbridge's attack and with Sheffield making a few mistakes to turn the ball over, Stourbridge made them pay, with a fourth try to the home team through back row forward Niall Gibbons. Chris Scott failed with the conversion again, but Stourbridge had the lead once more and a bonus point at 22 points to 17 despite a good performance from Sheffield. The half ended without further score from either side and we all tried to find a way to warm up.

The second half began as competitively as the first had finished, but handling errors began to creep ever more into Sheffield game, giving Stourbridge vital possession and position on the field, and with 9 minutes gone the wrecking ball that is jack Lea took a hand. Following the ball being lost forward in a tackle, he burst out of the Stourbridge 22 with a run demolishing the Sheffield mid-field defence, handed on to others before being on hand to score the fifth try to the right of the posts. Chris Scott missed the conversion again, but the led was out to 27 points to 17. Sheffield mounted an attack, but his broke down on the Stourbridge 22, and Stourbridge mounted another attack from the resulting scrum, Jack Lea being involved once gain, for number 8, Tom Dodd to score his second try, this time under the posts. Chris Scott added the conversion and the lead was out to 34 points to 17 after 55 minutes. Sheffield dug in and fought back, but the errors kept all hopes of scoring firmly on the back burner, particularly with the line out misfiring deep in Stourbridge territory. With time running out Sheffield once more had line out close to Stourbridge's line. The line out was lost and Stourbridge once more found a hole in Sheffield's defence, which had anticipated being in attack. The attack once more sped up the field, for back row forward, Sam Montieri to score under the posts. The conversion was taken by replacement scrum half, Nick David and Stourbridge led by 41 points to 17 with 78 minutes gone. Referee Ben Davis decided it was time to take refreshment and we all headed for, what we hoped was a very warm club house.
