Following the loss to Newport Salop two weeks ago and the postponement of the home match with Nuneaton last week, Sheffield went on the road to Coventry and Broadstreet RFC who have, by their standards, had a poor season. Sheffield travelled without captain and backrow, Alex Fawdry, but were pleased to see the return to the fray, from injury, of number 8, Sean Casey. Right wing Nick Marshall was out injured, so the back division had to be reshuffled. Centre Jamie Flint went out onto the right wing, with Ben Parker moving back into the centre from fly half, with George Castledine returning at fly half. Full back Andy Hodgson was also unavailable and was replaced by Kai Ramrattan.
Sheffield started the match very brightly when Broadstreet failed to secure the kick off and Sheffield drove on to Broadstreet’s 22-metre, but were then held up in the maul. However, Broadstreet’s clearance gave Sheffield the opportunity to run the ball back. Matt Adcock made a telling break and Broadstreet were penalised at the breakdown. Sheffield had a lineout just five metres out from which number 8, Sean Casey barged his way over the try line to score the first try with barely three minutes gone. George Castledine added the conversion and Sheffield led by 7 points to nil. Sheffield secured the ball at the restart and George Castledine was able to kick Sheffield back down to Broadstreet’s 22-metre again, but Broadstreet were able to work there way out with the help of a couple of knock-ons by Sheffield, a charged down kick and a scrum penalty, leaving Sheffield defending ten metres from their own line. Sean Casey broke from the scrum and set up the ruck, and Steve Depledge kicked for territory. However, Broadstreet came back strongly and with Sheffield scrambling back, Broadstreet had a penalty in-front, which left wing Dale glover converted to make the score 3 points to 7 after eleven minutes.
Shortly after the re-start, Sheffield were awarded a penalty at a lineout just outside their own 22-metre, but the kick to touch was ill-judged in the wind and missed touch and Broadstreet had attacking ball, they kicked and Sheffield knocked on. Broadstreet had the impetus and Sheffield looked to be a little lost. Broadstreet went into keep ball and drive mode and were soon camped on Sheffield’s five metre line. Sheffield conceded the penalty and Broadstreet kicked to the corner. They secured the ball and drove for the line. The referee decided that Sheffield had deliberately pulled the maul down and awarded a penalty try, somewhat harshly as this was only the second penalty in the ‘red-zone’, and Broadstreet led by 10 points to 7 after nineteen minutes. Sheffield came back strongly, securing the ball at the re-start and a penalty at the breakdown gave Sheffield the opportunity to kick into the corner for a lineout just ten metres out, from which Matt Adcock burst through the Broadstreet defence to score Sheffield’s second try after twenty-two minutes. The conversion was missed, but Sheffield had the lead again by 10 points to 12.
However, Sheffield were to suffer a Déjà-Vu moment, when once again they failed to find touch from a penalty and Broadstreet were able to break all the way back to Sheffield’s 22-metre before giving another penalty away at the breakdown. This time Sheffield made touch, but lost the ball at the lineout and then conceded a penalty just fifteen metres out, from which they kicked to touch for a five-metre lineout. Having secured the ball, they drove in field and Broadstreet’s hooker, Alex Willis crashed over for Broadstreet’s second try. Dale Glover converted and Broadstreet had the lead once more at 17 points to 12 after thirty-three minutes. Sheffield battled back again, but credit to Broadstreet as they mounted a stout defence to take them into the break still holding the lead.
The second half saw Sheffield beginning to get some go-forward, but not with sufficient intensity to break down to Broadstreet defence until they managed to get a turnover on halfway and Broadstreet were caught napping. Sheffield burst through the defensive line with Tom Womack and Lewis Bowman before handing on the Steve Depledge to score the third try for Sheffield. George Castledine added the conversion and Sheffield led by 17 points to 19 after fifty-seven minutes. However, Sheffield were to lose second-row forward Dave Clayden shortly afterwards, which was to leave Sheffield’s lineout in some distress for the remainder of the match. Sheffield seemed to be unable to mount a sustained amount of pressure, and Broadstreet kept managing to find a hole in Sheffield defence, and when Sheffield turned the ball over on half way, Broadstreet went off flying down their left wing. Jamie Flint got back to prevent the try, but in so doing, also secured the wrath of the referee, who despatched him to the ‘sin bin’ on sixty-five minutes. Sheffield appeared to weather the storm, but Broadstreet were awarded a penalty just 22-metres out after seventy-two minutes, which Dale Glove despatched to give Broadstreet the merest of leads at 20 points to 19. However, with the match in the death throws and with barely three minutes left on the clock, Sheffield secured a penalty on or around Broadstreet’s 22-metre line. Having barely won any lineout ball since Dave Clayden had gone off, Sheffield elected to kick to the touch line instead of at goal, and to add insult to injury, the kick went dead and Broadstreet had a scrum from which they went into stick it up your jumper mode and ran out narrow winners, 20 points to 19.
