Sheffield travelled the relative short distance to Wheatley Hills, Doncaster without several crucial players, particularly in the backs with full back Andy Hodgson and three-quarters Joe Cribley, Ron Conville and Joe McHale all absent for various reasons. Sheffield looked very hesitant, but were almost immediately awarded a penalty in their own 22 metre area. However, the kick to touch was hooked badly and made little territory from which Wheatley Hills went hard at Sheffield’s defence, which was obviously still on the mythical bus, and with less than 2 minutes gone Sheffield had conceded a try just by their posts through Wheatley’s second row, Andrew Penno. Full back Owen Gillvray added the conversion and Sheffield trailed by 7 points to nil.

Sheffield made a number of incursions into the Wheatley Hills half, but a series of knock-ons and penalties, plus a yellow card for Alex Fawdry after he had been on the pitch less then a minute and was deemed to have deliberately knocked on to stop a Wheatley hills attack around the half way line, prevented Sheffield from reducing the arrears. Then with 21 minutes gone Wheatley Hills were able to add top their tally when the were able to score a push over try, with their ex-Sheffield number 8, Tom White making the score. Gillvray added the conversion and Sheffield now trailed by 14 points to nil.

Sheffield gained their entry to the scoreboard three minutes later with s penalty through fly half, Jimmy Pearson to reduce the Wheatley Hills lead to 14 points to 3. Sheffield appeared to grow in confidence were beginning to look the stronger of the two sides and after 31 minutes, Sheffield 8, Jonnie France was able to make Wheatley Hills pay for a number of errors and penalties conceded, scoring out to the right of the posts. Jimmy Pearson added the conversion and the score was Wheatley Hills 14, Sheffield 10. Sheffield had a further chance to add to their score just 2 minutes later when they created a 2 man overlap out on the left, but a knock on killed the move with the try line beginning. A second chance was also spurned when a wild pass left wing Ali Womack grabbing at fresh air. However, on the stroke of half time, Sheffield did find a way to the Wheatley Hills try line when once again Jonnie France crashed over again. Jimmy Pearson once again added the conversion and at the break Sheffield had the lead at 14 points to 17.

As the second half progressed Wheatley Hills were given too many opportunities to gain good possession and territory through Sheffield’s indiscipline and after 9 minutes, Wheatley Hills took advantage, kicking a penalty through Owen Gillvray to tie the scores at 17 points all. Four minutes later Sheffield conceded a third try through their pack; Gillvray added the conversion and Wheatley Hills led again at 24 points to 17. The battle raged on but Sheffield could not break Wheatley’s defence down, until that is the point at which the match was going into stoppage time. Sheffield were camped on the Wheatley Hills line, scrum half Ben Parker dummied and went for the line between the posts. A number of Wheatley Hills players climbed on his back, but Ben just kept going and scored under the posts to take the score to 24 points to 22, with the conversion in front of the posts to come. Unfortunately, Jimmy Pearson was too close to the posts and his conversion was charged down. The referee played another three minutes of stoppage time, but Sheffield could not add to their score and Wheatley Hills went away the slightly happier and with the four points fore the win, leaving Sheffield with the solitary bonus point.
