Sheffield U17 second outing of the season was against Yarnbury on the same AGP that saw us lose the final of the Yorkshire Cup last season, so not a place with the best of memories.
Sheffield fielded a squad of 26 boys for the encounter with all players getting at least a half of rugby, including 2 new players and the 2 players who had debuted against Stockport the week before.
Sheffield kicked off in fantastic conditions and Yarnbury failed to deal with the kick turning over possession which after a couple of phases of play saw Sheffield score under the sticks following a neatly worked move in the back line.
Yarnbury then managed to keep possession for about the next 20 minutes with Sheffield never quite managing to turn them over, however solid defense kept Yarnbury out and eventually Sheffield broke at pace and after some excellent and very unselfish interplay in the back line between forwards and backs managed a second score.
That was it until half time which saw the second round of changes to the team as the match was effectively split into 4 equal quarters.
The second half saw Sheffield start to retain more possession and pressure the Yarnbury line more frequently although Yarnbury did have their own time on the ball but failed to break the Sheffield defense.
Eventually the pressure told and Sheffield ran in 4 more tries as the strength in depth of the squad began to tell when fresher legs came on in the final quarter.
The last score was a deserved one from Yarnbury although frustratingly came from a Sheffield error rather than sustained pressure leading to a final score of 40-7.
Well done to the entire squad who played the game at our pace and dealt well with the pressure in defense.
Thanks to Yarnbury for their hospitality and an excellent game played in the right spirit and good luck to them for the rest of the season.
