Sheffield 3rd XV travelled to the impressive new facilities at Dronfield on Saturday 16th April 2011 with 9 Colts in the side, hence an open and fast game was anticipated.

Having watched the large Dronfield pack warm up and taken note of the very wide pitch, the game plan for Sheffield was obvious, spin it out wide and as fast as possible. Sheffield received the kick-off and proceeded to do as instructed with Brett Rhodes, playing in his preferred position of outside centre, making a fine break on the outside. Danny Bearman, in his customary position of fly-half, backed up Brett Rhodes and received the scoring pass to touch down under the posts after only 2 minutes of play. Danny Bearman added the simple conversion making the score Dronfield 0, Sheffield 7.

Dronfield, however, were never going to lie down, with Chalky White (senior) leading the pack and an experienced fly-half putting their large forwards into the right places on the park, they came back at Sheffield hard, leading to a number of infringements from the visitors. This led to an easy 3 penalty points for the Dronfield fly-half on 5 minutes and a try and conversion for the home side on 15 minutes, making the score Dronfield 10, Sheffield 7.

Sheffield then struck back almost immediately from the re-start with Alex Lee, playing out of position in the 2nd row, rampaging through a number of would-be tacklers and crashing over for a try after 17 minutes of play. Danny Bearman added the extras putting Sheffield back into the lead at 10 points to 14. Again from the restart Sheffield spun the ball wide and winger Jim Arundale scored an excellent try in the corner. Danny Bearman struck a clean conversion making the score Dronfield 10, Sheffield 21 with only 19 minutes played.

Sheffield then inexplicably forgot the game plan and decided to take on the Dronfield pack for the remainder of the half, this lead to a try for the home side on the stroke of half-time, bringing the score to 15 to 21, and a well earned rest and time to take some water on board.

Dronfield came out for the second half determined to see the visitors off with pressure being applied through their pack, which led to a try on 55 minutes; score now close at 20 to 21. Alec Stephens, coming off the bench at half-time to replace Henry Bradshaw-Smith at fullback, collected the ball from the restart and made one of his trade mark searing breaks to go over for a fine solo effort, which Danny Bearman duly converted, score after 56 minutes Dronfield 20, Sheffield 28. Dronfield then struck back with a well taken penalty goal, score 23 to 28. Sheffield then remembered the game plan and started to move the wall wide again to good effect. Edward "Twiggy" Knights, playing in his first ever senior match, and playing at scum-half, went over for his debut senior try after some excellent handling down the back line on 65 minutes and Robin Drinkall, playing on the wing, followed up almost immediately with a try of his own in the corner. Score after 67 minutes Dronfield 23, Sheffield 40.

Dronfield still remained determined and scored again on 69 minutes; score 30 points to 40, in what was turning out to be a most entertaining encounter. That was however, to be the last of the Dronfield scores, with the fitness of the younger colts now starting to tell. Alex Lee bagged a second try on 72 minutes, Brett Rhodes got a deserved score on 75 minutes and Jim Arundale broke the spirit of the home side with an interception try on 78 minutes. Danny Bearman converted all 3 tries making the final score Dronfield 30 Sheffield 61.

Man-of-the-match went to open-side flanker Jack Jones, who demonstrated huge bravery and skill, by tackling the much larger Dronfield Number 8, Chalky White, out of the game. In addition, Danny Bearman accumulated 21 points, with one try and 8 conversions.

A beer or two was then enjoyed with our hosts in their impressive new club house!!
