Report by Drew Gardiner 18th March 2012

Sheffield U10's play well but come away without silverware
Pool A Scores:

1st Game - Sheffield 0 (0T) to Wetherby 25 (5T) - Loss

2nd Game - Sheffield 0 (0T) to Old Rishworthians 35 (7T) - Loss

3rd Game - Sheffield 0 (0T) to Sandal A 25 (5T) - Loss

4th Game - Sheffield 0 (0T) to Dinnington 30 (6T) - Loss

The Sheffield B team played their hearts out and put up some heroic defence but were outplayed by bigger, better sides in all 4 of their games. There was a bit of cannon fodder about the team playing in this pool and whilst they tried and got close to scoring a couple of times, they simply didn't have the firepower to match the opposition. A couple of stand-out performances in the team were Dan in the first game who was on a one-man mission and Connor who tackled his heart out in every game and made good ground against tough opposition. This team went through a steep learning curve today and credit to them for sticking to it and keeping their heads up throughout.

Pool B Scores:

1st Game - Sheffield 30 (6T) to Sandal B 0 (0T) - Win - scorers: Rory, Woody, Tupps (2), Thomas H (2)

2nd Game - Sheffield 20 (4T) to York 5 (1T) - Win - scorers: Rory, GP, Tupps (2)

3rd Game - Sheffield 0 (0T) to West park Leeds 5 (1T) - Loss

4th Game - Sheffield 10 (2T) to Old Brodleans (1T) - Win - scorers: Tom R, Rory

Sheffield just miss out on qualification for the final.

Sheffield A started well in their first two games against Sandal B and York and managed to get off to a flying start. The game against York was a good game, with York playing attractive, fast flowing rugby and Sheffield playing more of an up-the-middle style. Sheffield met sterner opposition in West Park who played aggressive and direct rugby. When facing tougher teams Sheffield need to be able to adjust their style and move the ball around as too often it didn't get past fly-half and inside centre, which made it easier for West park to defend against. In the end it looked as if Sheffield might sneak an equaliser but the oppositions defence was good enough for them to hold out for win. In the final game against Old Brods, Sheffield were again struggling to make an impact and it wasn't until the second half that they worked it out and moved the ball more freely and across the backs. This worked a treat and Sheffield powered to 2 quick tries the pick of which was the second where the ball moved hands between forwards and backs before William T got close to the line and managed a neat off-load to Rory to dropped across the line - impressive stuff. So some good rugby across the games in this pool but not quite good enough to get to the final.
