On a miserable October morning the Sheffield Medics 1st and 2nd XV teams met early in preparation for the much anticipated games away at Thornesians. A tough encounter was fully expected, as some of the senior players had narrowly lost against them in a cup game last season.
During the journey there, the rain continued to lash down, supporting the Met office’s prediction of heavy rain all day. After arriving and changing, a short and sharp warm-up had the players ready for battle, eager for the first whistle.
Kick-off. The game started slowly, with both teams finding their feet, trying to establish a tempo. Possession changed hands often, either through kicking or errors. However, late in the first half the medics began to assert some dominance. Working through the phases, the Medics halfbacks began to probe the gaps in the thornesian’s defence, leading to the first try of the game. Gabbott skipped through several tackles before taking contact. Seeing several of this season’s top try scorers (Fawdry and Shaw) on his shoulder, he purposefully to the ball to ground, allowing Edgar to pick up and waltz over line. (Try converted by Farmer).
The rest of the game is slightly hazy. Medics scored another try (Scorer unknown, but it involved a successful conversion from the touch line by Farmer). Thornesians scored one try and two penalties.
With a well-deserved win under our belts, all that was left was to prepare for a night of reserved, responsible drinking at fresher’s social.
