I was informed last week about the sad passing away of Jim Tolley by Steve Sillery, and I wanted to share the note from Steve, which I've added below.
As news was shared of Jim's death, Barry Tiplady also got in touch to send me the attached photos, which show the Shelford 1st XV team in 1972. Jim is in the bottom row 3rd from the right between Bill Boswell and Jim Whittington (see full player line up at the end of this letter).
RIP Jim and keep flying high
Membership Secretary, Webmaster and VP Liaison Officer
I'd be grateful if you would circulate this note about the recent news of the death of Jim Tolley. News brought to me via Dave Williams.
Jim was our teammate in the early 1970s in a a side which was reasonably successful and more importantly was a joy to play with. Jim played in the centre and although marvellously talented was very modest. Fleet of foot, sharp and held together by a variety of straps and supports, some of which pressed heavily on the laws, including some sort of aluminium shin pad, appropriate for a metallurgist. His defence was stern helped by his competitive spirit. Graham Childerley benefitted enormously under Jim's tutelage.
Witness to his loyalty and team spirit was that in his last season he travelled week in and week out from Leicester way including once a week to mid week training.
He was a very good man to have at your side both on and off the field.
RIP Jim Tolley
