Shelford U16 46 - Fergus Highlanders 5

Try scorers: Jack Smith, Will Freeman (2), George Doel, Hamish Brewis, Osian Williams, Taylor Hein-Jones (2) and Miguel Meirim

Friday night's match under the floodlights turned out to be a great experience for all the players involved. Fergus Highlanders were on tour from Canada and had already played two matches earlier in the week and their team was well and truly up and running, Shelford on the other hand had a brand new challenge

We had been joined by nine players from Ely under 16's and had about 45 mins before kick off to work on a few basics to get the team off to a good start. Full credit must be given to both the Ely players and our own boys who took to the task with real enthusiasm and work exceptionally hard to make things work

The game started with a mistake from the kick off and after retaining the ball, Shelford went through a number of phases and scored in the top right hand corner. The visitors hit back and forced the home team into a number of infringements that push us back into our 22. After a series of forward drives to the line, the ball was spun wide and the Canadians first and only try was scored

As the match went on the this two thirds Shelford, one third Ely under 16's XV just got better and better. Our tackling against what was a very large and physical Highlanders team was superb and all the boys put their bodies on the line to keep the visitors at bay. The most pleasing aspect was the speed and determination of our attack. Every opportunity was taken to play the game at a high tempo

Come the second half and the boys in maroon and white wear firing on all cylinders and piled the pressure onto their guests at every opportunity. All nine players from Ely played exceptionally well, as did Tom Simms on his first match back after 14 months without playing. Although we scored eight tries to one, the game was always competitive and we always had to be at our best to break the Highlanders tough defence

Well done to everyone who played, especially the Fergus Highlanders who put up a great fight. Also a big thank you for all the help from the parents in making sure that we put on a good show for our Canadian guests
