Shelford started the 2019/20 season with a friendly against Brentwood at the Davey Field.

Shelford started the 2019/20 season with a friendly against Brentwood at the Davey Field, thankfully on the 3G, given the hardness of the grass pitches. The squad greeted newcomers Henry Malheiros and Joe Gregory and welcomed back Will Buckley after a few seasons out of action. All in all it was an encouraging way to open the Shelford U16s’ account, with the teams agreeing to play 3 thirds to the game to help simplify substitutions.

The opening third saw Shelford open up an early lead through Eoin Collins, going over following some concerted pressure by the forwards with Harvey Taylor slotting the conversion. After this the defences from both sides were very much in the ascendancy and the game struggled to find any real rhythm. However the home team kept plugging away and slowly started to dominate the midfield, allowing Ryley Stiebrins-Brown and Sam Arbon the space to score, with Harvey Taylor adding the extras. Just before the end of the period, Shelford won a turnover in the centre of the park, quickly moved the ball left to find Joe Gregory who steamed down the touchline to score out wide, with Harvey narrowly missing the conversion.

The second period saw Shelford make wholesale changes to the team, with plenty of substitutions and plenty of players playing in new positions. This certainly didn’t put them out of their stride at all, indeed at times their off-loading out of the tackle was sublime and set up some excellent attacking platforms. Josh Barrett showed great strength to score from the base of the scrum 5 metres out and shortly after Joe Gregory scorched over for his second try in his new colours.

The third period saw more changes from the home side and Josh Barrett once again used his power from close out to score his second, with Harvey Taylor adding the extras. Perhaps with the opposition tiring, Shelford managed to find more and more space and finished off the game with two superb scores, both times moving the ball with real pace through several hands to score out wide through Kyle Harris and Henry French, to complete a 53-0 win.

Eoin Collins 5 pts
Ryley Brown 5 pts
Samuel Arbon 5 pts
Joseph Gregory 10 pts
Josh Barrett 10 pts
