Spring is in the air

Shelford welcomed an injury depleted squad from St Ives to the Davey Field on a breezy but sunny morning, with a definite hint of spring being in the air.

Shelford welcomed an injury depleted squad from St Ives to the Davey Field on a breezy but sunny morning, with a definite hint of spring being in the air.
For periods Shelford played some excellent rugby, making good ground through the forwards and even more so when they spread the ball wide. Unfortunately the rhythm of the game was all too frequently broken up through handling errors conceding possession, although to be fair they more often than not quickly turned the ball over again. On several occasions they turned defence into attack in the blink of an eye and scored five impressrive first half tries, through Josh Barrett, Rob Lucas, Ryley Stiebrins-Brown, Samuel Arbon and Eoin Collins, three of which were converted by Harvey Taylor. Seemed slightly ironic to have a half-time score of 31-0 – sound familiar? At least we know you can’t lose from there…
The second half was pretty much a mirror image of the opening period, despite several players moving positions. When they were on their game Shelford played some outstanding rugby and scored another five tries through Rob Lucas, Scott Revell, Henry French, Will Rand and Ned Gale, again three of which were converted by Harvey Taylor. It would have been more but the dropped passes and on one occasion St Ives made them pay through a very well worked try late in the game. So it wasn’t quite a 76 point classic, but a good workout nonetheless.
