On a day where the weather nearly cancelled a good mornings rugby. Shelford travelled through torrential rain to play at a welcoming Colchester.
The Sharks team won the toss and opted to play against the wind in the first half.
Colchester scored early in the game but missed the conversion. Their second score came again from a long period of shared possession due to turnovers from handling errors, penalties or going into touch. This try was converted.
A few minutes from half time Sharks won a penalty and kicked for the corner to secure the lineout. A few phases later, and hard work from the other forwards to get close, Billy White reached the try line.
Half time score 12-5.
Now with wind at their backs Shelford made a good effort to support and move the ball through hands when the opportunity arose. But Colchester scored once more and converted.
Sharks made a great come back score with sustained phase play. Alfie Crane made driving run towards the posts but was brought down short of the line where Avaan Barnett picked up the ball and was also brought down short. Sharks managed to recycle and once more Alfie drove from two metres out and scored. Tui Baleisolomone converted the kick. Score 19-12.
At this point it was getting late in the game. Shelford had to play out of their ’22 to keep possession. Play was moving across the pitch, and an opening in the defence for Jonathon Hunter appeared for him to burst through. Running two thirds of the pitch Jonathon put the ball down under the posts. Tui made good the conversion.
Score,19 all, and the game finished shortly after.
