The match result was Luton 43 – Shelford 12. The teams were more equal than the score reflects, but unfortunately the result was an accurate reflection of the match.

The match started with Luton putting pressure on us for a long period. They seemed to do better out of the rucks and kept the ball in our half scoring two tries and converting the second one.

In the second part of the first half we mostly kept the ball in their half. A good attack had Ari Fogh making a run, passing to Bryce Holland for a second run, passing to Ben Coney who had to go down with the ball right at the try line, but unfortunately coming up just short.

Later, Alex Illingworth took the ball behind a scrum in our half and made a long kick on the left side and Fogh ran for it - picking it up on the second bounce and scored a try. Joel Butler-Burd converted with a drop kick after the wind pushed the ball off the tee.

HT 12-7 to Luton.

Immediately at the start of the second half a Luton player took the ball at the halfway line, broke free of our line, and ran all the way to score a try, which Luton did not convert. Luton proceeded to score three more tries, all of which were converted. Two were done by a single fast player who broke free far up the pitch and ran with little opposition. In the third a Luton player got the ball halfway on to our half, and kept running and barging through successive defenders to pass the ball right on the try line.

We started getting back in the game after a while. One of our attacks sent the ball out to the backs on the left side, ending with Elliot Pratt running past the last defenders and scoring a try for us right at the left edge, which proved too hard to convert. We were doing a little better now, but Luton again had a player get the ball around the middle of our half and barge through the defence to score a try. This try, the last of the match, was not converted.
Our biggest problem may have been a lack of effective tackling which let the Luton players get too confident and get away with too many long scoring runs.
