Shelford Tigers took on a Colchester U15’s on a wet blustery day but the conditions did not detract from the quality of the rugby.
This was Shelfords first match of the season and playing against the wind did well to go through the phases, retaining passion well and then shipping it out to the backs on numerous occasions. They did however struggle to make inroads as Colchester employed a tactical kicking game. This led to the first try when a fortunate bounce of the ball led to a run in against the balance of play. Pinned deep into their half due mainly to the wind Shelford were forced to try and run the ball out towards the end of the first half and unfortunately an interception led to Colchester’s second try. Both were converted leaving the half time deficit at 14-0.
Half-time score - 0-14
With the wind behind them Shelford totally dominated the second half and when the ball was passed through the backs Gabriel Donnelly finished off a nice move on the left wing.
Another try followed up some terrific forward momentum with the line being broken eventually, new comer Kyle Edmonds ran in in the left corner. 2 terrific conversions by Fraser Christie saw Shelford level the scores at 14-14. Unfortunately we were then suckered by an unfortunate bounce of the ball and wind assistance after a kick exchange that allowed Colchester to take the ball easily and run in for the winner. They missed the conversion from in front of the sticks to give us hope of a late steal. Immense pressure for the last 5 mins saw them miss 2 or 3 opportunities to take the match but alas they were held up on each occasion. All in all an excellent first outing despite the loss.
Full-time score - 14-19
