There was drama before a ball was even kicked at the Dovecote Stadium, with Shepshed Dynamo forced into a late change in goal. Goalkeeper coach Mikey Turner was called upon to don the gloves after captain Dan Wallis pulled out during the warm-up, with Callum Burkey stepping in to take the armband. It was one of eight changes to the side as Dynamo looked to balance squad rotation with a strong push in the FA Trophy.

Despite a bright atmosphere, it was the visitors who enjoyed the better of the first half. Inside two minutes, Liam Murphy broke clear of the backline but fired his left-footed effort high and wide of Turner’s goal, a let-off for Dynamo.

Anstey continued to look sharp in the final third, and just before the half-hour mark, Liversidge almost broke through, only for Jowan Partridge to produce a superb covering challenge to deflect it over the top.

From the resulting corner, however, Shepshed’s resistance was broken. Tomlin swung a dangerous delivery to the back post, where Lewis Gibbens powered home a header to give the Nomads the lead in the 29th minute.

Things got harder for Dynamo just eight minutes later when another Tomlin corner was met at the near post by Murphy, who placed the ball in from close range to double Anstey’s advantage.

The Nomads continued to press, with Chitiza twice threatening before the interval. First, he was picked out by Humphreys and delivered a low cross that just evaded the onrushing Burniston, before trying his luck himself with a curling strike from the edge of the area that whistled just over Turner’s bar.

Shepshed started the second half with greater purpose and almost found a way back into the game on 48 minutes. A mistake from the Anstey backline gifted the ball to Josh Allen, who skipped past Annable, only for his low drive to be kept out by the feet of goalkeeper Conrad Logan. Moments later, Turner was called into action at the other end, tipping away a low long-range strike from Danny Gordon.

Anstey added a third just after the hour mark when Tendai Chitiza dispossessed the recovering Watson-Quilter, steadied himself and calmly slotted past Turner to make it three.

Substitute Dunkley gave Dynamo some attacking impetus on 71 minutes, showing great strength to muscle Annable off the ball, but his half-volley from distance flew wide.

However, any hopes of a late rally were dashed two minutes later when Murphy found space inside the box to guide in his second of the afternoon, making it 4-0.

The visitors continued to press for more in the closing stages. Burniston’s cross picked out Thomas, whose effort was bravely blocked by Timson, before Turner produced a save to deny Gibbens’ powerful header from a corner. With a minute left, Burniston teed up Grantham, who struck the base of the post from 18 yards.

A comprehensive victory for the visitors sees Anstey Nomads progress into the next round. For Dynamo, attention now turns back to league action with a quick turnaround as they host St Neots Town at the Dovecote Stadium on Tuesday night.
