Shepshed had a chance in the first minute when Ward shot over the bar but Newcastle were, territorially, to enjoy the better of play in the first 45 without ever looking really dangerous. For the home side Harry Clayton, on loan from Crewe, put a free kick just wide on 20 minutes and then five minutes later Jamie Haynes did the same. Dynamo keeper James Martin easily saved a Leon Ashman effort

Rob Mulonga’s terrier type attitude saw him create a couple of chances before the break. First he cut in from the left and fired just wide of the post, then from just inside the area he tried to lob keeper Ben Chapman who managed to finger-tip the ball upwards and gather at the second attempt

At half time Shepshed brought on Jerome O’Connor for Carter. Shepshed continued to defend stoutly and ten minutes into the half staged a good attack themselves, when David Boafo and Mulonga combined well down the flank before sending a cross into the box which just failed to find the inrushing Steve Chaplin.

Back at the Shepshed end, a short back header by Rob Brewer was intercepted but Martin pulled off a good save. Then a free header was given to Newcastle’s Andy Bratt but fortunately it went over the bar

A landmark in the 71st minute was the award of Shepshed’s first corner when Ryan North had an effort pushed round the post. Newcastle’s frustration began to show when a melee in their penalty area resulted in two of their players being yellow carded together with O’Connor.

The icing was added to the cake when, in the 81st minute, a superb cross by Jermain Hollis just begged to be headed home. Steve Chaplin duly obliged and Shepshed suddenly had all three points in their sight

Shepshed’s record of keeping the lead hasn’t been too good of late and the huge support the Dynamo had brought with them to this match suddenly turned all religious. Hands were firmly clasped together as Clayton flashed an effort just wide some sixty seconds later.

In the remaining ten minutes or so, which seemed an eternity, Newcastle blew hot and cold and it wasn’t until late into injury time that Curtis Price managed a shot on target which forced a good save out of Martin.

With three points in the bag the afternoon got even better when the news came through that Quorn had lost 8-nil and Shepshed were off the bottom of the table.
