A look back at a match from the 2006/2007 season

With no game this weekend we thought we'd entertain you Bears fans with a blast from the past, and give you a couple of match reports from our 2006/2007 Yorkshire League division 3 campaign.

As an added bonus see if you can name all 4 players playing for Sherburn in the action shot? There may be a prize........................

SHERBURN V UPTON A March 2007

Sherburn came unstuck in their attempt to stay top of the league against a strong Upton A that contained a few first teamers. Sherburn lost 28- 16 at home for only their 3rd league defeat of the season but were never over run. With a couple of regulars out Sherburn struggled to get up to speed in the first half but good work from Man Of the Match Wayne Frost , Paul Walshaw kept them in it. Forwards Matt Orford , Dan Stansfield and David Woofindin helped with good defence. Having lost full back Alex Booth through injury and Jonny Kear to a debateable sin bin Sherburn had to reshuffle all over the park which led to players playing out of position. Sherburn came back well in the 2nd half and Rhys Hughes and Kevin Jordan were good in both defence and attack but after 2 more injury setbacks Sherburn were unable to catch Upton who ran out worthy winners. Tries by Chris Lovell and 2 from Rhys Hughes and 2 conversions by Steven Wood were just not enough and all the hard defence by Ken Glew, Kev Booth, Craig Thompson, Paul Nicholson, Chris Lovell was just not enough.

Sherburns Team for the day Alex Booth, Paul Nicholson, Wayne Frost, Chris Lovell, Jonny Kear, Paul Walshaw, Steven Wood, Matt Orford, David Woofindin, Dan Stansfield, Ken Glew, Kevin Jordan, Rhys Hughes Subs Raymond Boyes, Peter Banks- Jones , Craig Thompson and Kevin Booth

The Coach would like to thank all those players who turned up for their efforts and also the ones who didn’t get a game. Also all the spectators who turned up to give their support to Sherburn Thank You.

Not to be undone the Bears backed this match up with one of the home games of the season!

SHERBURN V MILFORD A 07/04/07

Sherburn came out on top of this top of the table clash but looked nervous throughout. Sherburn were down 6 nil before finally looking like the top of the table side they are. Strong running forwards Matt Orford , Rhys Hughes and Lewis Booth laid the platform for a good win. Half backs Paul Dutson and Captain Steven Wood then led the team to a comfortable win. Tries from Chris Lovell 1 Craig Thompson 2 and Rhys Hughes 1 and with Wood converting 3 and a Karl Hay 1 it was left to Wood just to finish off with a well taken drop goal. The pick of the tries was from Chris Lovell who backed up a superb pick up and 80 meter run from Alex Booth who beat 3-4 defenders on the way to hand Chris an easy score. Wayne Frost was man of the match with an outstanding display and had a total of 27 tackles to his name. 2nd and 3rd man of matches were Rhys Hughes and Alex Booth. Other good contributions came from Paul Walshaw , Tony Booth, Jonny Kear and it was good to see Craig Thompson get on the score sheet for the 1st time this season. The win sets up Sherburn for a home tie in the top 4 playoffs which begin in May. They still have a chance to win the league title if Hunslet slip up in any of their last 4 games.

Sherburns Team for the day. Alex Booth, Andy Nichols, Wayne Frost, Chris Lovell, Craig Thompson, Paul Dutson, Steven Wood, Matt Orford, Karl Hay, Ken Glew, Jonny Kear, Rhys Hughes, Paul Walshaw, Paul Nicholson, Tony Booth, Lewis Booth and Shaun Richardson.

The coach wishes to thank all players who attended and all spectators who came to support the team.
