Games Dragons deserve much praise

Wortley Dragons v Sherburn Bears 06/02/16

Sheburn travelled the short distance into Leeds on Saturday to take on mid table Wortley, on a breezy windswept pitch overlooking Elland Road the Bears were looking to keep their unbeaten run in the league going with an 8th straight win. Much credit however must go to the home side who played the full match despite only being able to field 10 men, and they put up a commendable performance to do themselves and their club proud.

The game got started with a couple of handling errors from the Bears in what were fairly tricky conditions to keep hold of the ball, however it was clear that many of the Bears players felt the game was already in the bag and some lack lustre defence saw Wortley score the first try which their excellent fullback converted to give the home side an unlikely 6-0 lead with just 3 minutes gone. The Bears however soon burst into life and just a couple of sets later levelled the score before going on to score 4 more tries to take a half time lead of 6-28.

The second half was more of the same as the Bears piled on the misery for the plucky home side, 7 more scores followed but there was much disappointment as Wortley were allowed to score a second try again of the back of sloppy handling errors and penalties, to take the final score to 10-72. Try scorers for the Bears were Connor Jordan with 3, Jordan Richards 3, Matt Orford and Ben Pugh both scored a brace whilst there were individual scores for Ronnie Roebuck, Scotty Towell and Captain Ray Boyes, whilst Jordan slotted over 11 goals from 13 attempts in a good afternoon for the young marksman in poor conditions.

Best for the Bears on the day was JP Plant Hire man of the match Connor Jordan, the young hooker was in scintillating form scoring a hatrick and kicking 11 goals for a personal haul of 34 points. Second place went to new signing Matt Savage the rangy centre rolled back the years with a vintage performance, he was a real handful with the ball having a hand setting up more than a couple of the teams tries with his repeated line breaks. Third place went to hard working loose forward Ronnie Roebuck who again instigated many of his side tries with his direct running style and brilliant footwork. Supporter’s player went to hard working stand-off Sam Booth who was the key man in the majority of all the Bears scores, showing some excellent touches with the ball as well as continually leading the line in defence to top the teams tackle count for the 4th or 5th time this season.

This Saturday will be a much tougher assignment as Sherburn face second placed Doncaster Toll Bar at home at Everlsey Park with a 2.30pm kick off.
