The Community

Pupils at St Josephs Catholic Primary School have recently completed a six weeks programme in the FUNdamentals of Movement as part of their P.E. curriculum.

We are extremely grateful to Mr Mike Taylor Community Development Officer for Shevington Sharks A.R.L.F.C.,for kindly leading the sessions.

Apart from thorougly enjoying the programme ,the children have learned the importance of developing the skills of agility, balance and co-ordination in all areas of sport.

Their efforts have been rewarded with individual certificates, pens and trophies for the most improved boy and girl along with two fair play awards.

During this programme, skills were developed within the context of Rugby League and this has no doubt led to the popularity amongst both boys and girls of our newly introduced "Tag Rugby" Club, with as many as 26 attending from Year 5 and Year 6, after school.

Mr Taylor in conjunction with our involvement in the Lancashire Schools Sport Partnership, is providing the coaching supported by Mr Malley, a member of staff.

The children are now eagerly looking forward to taking part in a Tag Rugby tournament in the Spring term and putting their ABC skills to the test!!

Head Teacher Mrs Keating commented:

The course at St Joseph's was fantastic it was great to see all of the children taking such an active part during all of the sessions and progressing, led by a very enthusiastic Headteacher who not only attended but took an active role every week.

The course objective is to promote the key elements of Agility, Balance and Co-ordination and there are many elements within Rugby League which provide us with opportunities to demonstrate this.

The beauty of this particular course is that it does not discriminate against any child as it gives each individual the opportunity to improve their own personal level of ability, whilst promoting the ethics of both Fair play and Team play!

Finally i would like to add that the attitude and commitment of the pupils from St Joseph's was epitomized on the fith and final week of the course when the whole of the group asked Mrs Keating for an extra weeks Fundamentals which i was only to happy to deliver!!.

After all the course is called the FUNdamentals and if we can teach children the key elements whilst having FUN and all concerned enjoy it, it must be a good thing!!
