Shipston traveled to Coventry to face a Old Coventrians side who already had 2 victories under their belt, scoring 90 points in the process-but that didn't stop Shipston taking the game to their hosts and enjoyed early possession and territory. This shook OC's into action and with their much larger forwards and speedy backs they took the lead in the 9th minute with a breakaway down the left.5-0.
The Ram's hit back through Captain George Waywell who burst through several tackles to score a great individual try.5-5.
There then followed 15 minutes of both team's cancelling each other out until in the 26th minute OC's again scored a breakaway try.10-5.
At this point Shipston's heads seem to drop and with the loss of Hooker Matt Corby the Ram's leaked sloppy tries and penalties to find themselves 25-5 down approaching half time.Half time 25-5.
The 2nd half saw Shipston over powered by their much bigger and heavier opposition, with again not being able to field a genuine second rower lineout ball was difficult to secure-but the scrum being about 3 stone a man lighter did battle with both props,Alex Watton and Ben Haines having fine games.
OC's scored in the 49th,58th,68th and 74th minute with Shipston gamely battling and tackling to keep them out-and as they tired lost some of their discipline which resulted in a couple of yellow cards near the end.49-5.
So overall a disappointing result with the main problem's being we need to find very soon a couple of big 2nd rower's to bolster the pack to enable us to compete-then I'm sure the results will come.
Just a word of thanks to Paul of COVPRESS and his father-in-law Gwyn (who I assume is a very happy Welshman this morning!)for letting me and Mick join them for the pre match lunch at OC's-very nice people.
