A tough battle results in a 19-32 win away at Leams

The first half was a tense affair. Leamington were on the attack from outset and quickly scored their first try with a strong individual run, followed by a conversion. Leamington continued well and had the lion’s share of the possession, however could not get over the try line in no small part due to fierce tackling and defence from the Shipston boys.

There were some great individual moments, Will Flynn showed courage at Full back, Jack Deans looked good at no.8, Ollie Bowers made some great ground, the forwards in general played well throughout. However, Leamington’s possession took them over the try line again just before half time, which they converted.

The half time talk saw the boys back on the pitch fired up and ready to go. George Verinder came on and made a fantastic break, torpedoing through the opposition centres, the ball back in play it came to George Hendy who showed his turn of speed to score our first try of the day.

After the restart the ball went into touch. The ball came in from a neat throw in by Charlie Dews and was taken cleanly by Will Evans, with a drive from his fellow forwards they made ground, then pushed the ball out to George Hendy. He shipped it on to George Verinder who stormed through for a well-deserved try. George Hendy converted.

Leamington scored again and converted. The ball came back to Shipston and this time it was Adam Lane who burst through to score Shipston’s third.

Again the lineout take by Will Evans was clean, well organised and the forwards made good ground before Henry McCarthy with a nice piece of vision passed it to George Verinder who scored his second.

Leamington were again on the attack and Sam Lewis showed a very cool head to gather the ball from an awkward kick through. The forwards drove the ball up the field and then George Hendy finished off the move with his second of the afternoon. A great team try.

It was George Hendy again who saw from a free kick the opportunity and put the ball in the corner. The forwards again controlled possession and having spent the game working incredibly hard in making ground George McGinn couldn’t have chosen better when he picked up the ball and at full extension placed it over the try line to score Shipston’s sixth of the afternoon.

It was a challenging game and Leamington were great opposition. The forwards play in the first half coupled with the relentless tackling of the Shipston boys was excellent. They then followed this hard and hot half by returning after half time with the belief and capability to score tries. A well-deserved win.
