But played with great heart

With 13 of the normal U14’s squad unavailable it was a small team who arrived at Banbury just as the rain stopped. Banbury donated two of their squad of 25 to Shipston and the game got underway.

The first half saw some fantastic play from Shipston with four tries (Sam Lewis, Henry McCarthy, Arlie Williams and Ryan (Banbury)) and a conversion (Adam). And the boys stopped for the break 12-22 up. The tackling had been tremendous and Shipston had the lion’s share of possession. Sam showed a great turn of speed in attack and defence and Tommy Hatch at fullback played very well, consistently getting the ball back into attack and as the last line of defence. Adam Lane had a corking game and really controlled the play. Charlie Dews showed a moment of brilliance with two kicks and chases in succession making at least 50 yards.

Banbury couldn’t keep up.

After half time however the tide turned and Banbury re-grouped to increase their tally substantially ending the game 44-22 ahead. Shipston started to look weary and the game went against them.

Stalwarth throughout were the indomitable front row of Jonno Todd, Charlie Dews and Ollie Bowers. Together with the rest of the pack they didn’t allow one scrum to falter and held a large Banbury pack to account.

While it was a defeat, the U14’s can stand tall, they worked hard and held their own against strong and fresh-legged opposition.
