Great to see the ongoing progression of the Falcons team today; 2 hard fought games against decent opposition on a beautiful spring morning.
First game vs Beccehamians was nip and tuck but after the first 10 mins was played pretty much in their half. Due to some over eagerness, some white line fever and to be fair some solid Beccs defence we couldn’t quite muster a try. Then after a penalty conceded on the far side Beccs took a quick tap whilst our defence was still being spoken to by the ref, and their pacy winger streaked away to score a good try. Our boys showed great passion but lacked precision in the final 5 metres and so ended up 0-1 despite being on top for long periods.
After quite a feisty Beccs vs Whits encounter ref’d by yours truly and which ended 3-2 we then lined up to play Whits.
They looked a powerful unit but we’d seen in their previous game that they had a couple of chinks in their armour. It was another tight game and our defence was being tested in the early stages, camped in our 22. In the end Whits fashioned two tries via their enormous centre pairing. A few weeks ago this Falcons teams collective heads would’ve dropped but today they regrouped and came back into the game fantastically well and soon levelled things up at 2-2 which is how it ended. It could’ve gone either way and right at the death I thought we had blown it, but the cover defence (just) forced the Whits wing into touching the whitewash as the clock went red.
In both matches our boys came on strong towards the end which is testament to their commitment, team spirit and ever improving fitness and stamina.
Special mentions this week to a few boys, Alfie showing promise on debut, Dylan having his best game yet in a Sidcup shirt, Luke with some trademark big tackles, Madalin and Jack powerful in midfield and Jonathan and Dominic combining well as half backs before switching into a variety of positions !! Also to Oscar, a late call up but who carried strongly throughout.
Thanks to Dan and John from Beccehamians and OW’s respectively and to all their players coaches and supporters for a great morning.
