SEVEN GOAL TREAT FOR GOOD CROWD AT SKEM

SKELMERSDALE UNITED 4 1874 NORTHWICH 3

By Neil Leatherbarrow

Another healthy crowd at Stormy Corner were treated to a good evening’s entertainment as Tommy Lawson’s players came out the best of seven goals. Arguably the scoreline flattering Northwich a little as Skelmersdale were 4-1 up with five minutes to go, until they took their foot off the pressure pedal late on.
Skelmersdale have now used 29 players in their three pre-season games as the whole team was changed at half-time, with Skelmersdale holding a 2-1 lead.
Northwich took the lead inside two minutes, Chris Lunn skilfully lifting the ball over goalkeeper Dean Porter for the opener.
It didn’t take Skelmersdale long to level things up though, as Aiden Kirkbride latched onto a through ball in the ninth minute and slotted the ball into the net.
Skelmersdale pressed hard during the first-half and got their reward a couple minutes before the interval when youngster Jonathon Cahill did his cause no harm at all, with a close range conversion via his head from a right-wing corner.
The game did go a bit quiet for twenty minutes or so after the restart as both teams made substantial changes and they took time to settle down again, but the last twenty minutes were very good.
A stunning goal brought the crowd to their feet in the 72nd minute. Dan Mitchley controlled the ball about 25 yards from goal, at the same time creating an angle to shoot, and what a shot it was, thundering into the very top corner, leaving the goalkeeper well beaten.
When Jamie Rainford followed up with a fourth goal three minutes later it was game set and match. Or so it looked.
In the 85th minute Northwich struck with a net bursting strike from Ryan Jackson, that gave them hope, however, by the time Stuart Tulloch made it 4-3, it was too late to matter as the full-time whistle soon followed.
