Late Late drama as United claim victory

LATE LATE DRAMA AS UNITED CLAIM VICTORY
Skelmersdale United 3-2 Prescot Cables

There was a Grand stand finish at the Burscough Community Stadium on Saturday as Skelmersdale United grabbed a much-deserved 94th minute winner from the sublime finish of Jordan Southworth.
Emphatically Beaten 3-0 by Cables just 10 days ago in the FA Cup, United showed from the outset there would be no repeat of the poor performance.

Skem hustled and harried their opponents giving them little time to dwell on the ball and creating a number of chances themselves.

Going in front on the half hour, Elliott Morris did well to beat his defender by the right-hand corner flag whipping a cross over, headed on by Djalo into the feet of Southworth who swept home with aplomb from 10 yards.
5 minutes later and United’s constant pressure paid off again as a sweeping move down the left, involving the energetic Southworth, Brannigan and Alex Griffiths the latter’s cross into the box headed out to Sam Sheen 30 yards out, his rasping drive bulged the back of the net giving keeper Passant no chance to make it 2-0 going to the break.

Prescot proved a tougher nut to crack in the 2nd half and applied more pressure going forward, but the United defence stood firm under the guidance of the excellent Michael Grogan, there was not much they could have done when a ball into the box from Cables Luke Pritchard took a nasty bounce to deceive Coughlan in the United goal and Kyle Sambor stooped down to head home to give Cables a lifeline on 76 minutes.
The scores where level just 3 minutes later as Cables threw everything at the United defence, a corner from right was half cleared to the feet of Foley, who’s driven shot was charged down by the on rushing defence, hitting the hand of Grogan, the referee having no hesitation pointing to the spot, Foley stepped up and duly dispatched to leave the game on a knife edge for the final 10 minutes.

An altercation on the far touchline involving a number of players and coaches from both sides temporarily halted play, with a member of each side being shown a red card. The resulting delay enabled United to grab a deserved late winner, a cross from Hont caused mayhem in the Cables goalmouth a clearance found Southworth on the edge of the box and with a sweet swing of his right boot the ball curled inches inside the upright to send the Skem supporters into rapture.

It was the second game of the weekend where Skem have had to hold their nerve and they come out of the Bank Holiday fixtures with 6 points that puts them nicely placed in 4 position in the Pitching In Northern Premier League West Division, 3 points behind leaders Macclesfield
