Three influential players were missing from the Skelmersdale line-up at Warrington, two suspended; one injured and it probably made all the difference at Canitlever Park. In the end Skelmersdale went down to a pair of headers, against a Warrington team that were far from impressive, leaving many with the view that perhaps if injured forward Harry Blackburn had been fit it might have made all the difference as Skem were rather blunt up front..
The opening goal arrived on 22 minutes and you could argue that maybe the move was rehearsed. A short corner on the left was rolled to Scot Metcalfe; he crossed deep to the far post, where Samuel Ilesamni evaded his marker and header home.
The rest of the half was closely fought, and barring a header from Ilesamni that went over the crossbar there wasn’t much to warm the crowd on a cold afternoon.
The second period was pretty scrappy too.
In the 62nd minute Warrington won a free-kick half way between the corner flag and the eighteen yard box, Dylan Vassallo swung the ball in and Lewis Codling had a fairly free header at the near post to make it 2-0.
Skelmersdale made changes and came more into the game, Alex Davies put a shot into the side-netting on 64 minutes, then on 77 minutes Shacklock was put through, but he just couldn’t seem to get his shot in and the ball dropped to Strickland, who saw his effort go over the top, though to be fair he had a couple of defenders between him and the goal.
Skelmersdale will have Dylan Smith, Jack Watts and hopefully the injured Harry Blackburn available for next Saturday’s home game against high flying Spennymoor, but the opposition will be much stronger than Warrington were.
