Skelmersdale United 1 Bamber Bridge 3

By Simon Driscoll

Skelmersdale United ended their tumultuous home campaign with a 3-1 defeat by promotion hunters Bamber Bridge on Tuesday evening.

The game was played in mixed conditions after heavy rain across the day resulted in a late decision to pass the pitch by the match referee. Dave Powell was forced into a number of changes from Saturday with Eddie Toner and Deklan Hill handed first starts in place of Jack Lenehan (inj) and Mike Roddy who was named on the bench as was Liam Bott for the first time.

The visitors started brightly with Adam Dodd's near post cross forcing Callum Roberts into a duo of fingertip saves. The United 'keeper was kept busy as he denied Alistair Waddecar from close range and minutes later with a low save.

Brig struck the opener on 12 minutes as an inswinging free-kick from Dodd saw Danny Forbes beat the defence to tap in from six yards for 1-0 and they could have doubled the lead within minutes as a clever play saw James Boyd's shot cleared off the line by Phil Mooney.

United's first chance of the evening saw Liam Davies force a stop from Lloyd Rigby from outside the area before Hyuga Tanner swept a shot wide of the post for the visitors. Brig doubled the lead on 33 minutes as a clever run by Dodd saw him lay off for Boyd who fired past Roberts for 2-0.

Skem pulled one back just three minutes later as a lofted ball from Jack Fleming saw Davies head into the path of Scott Bakkor who slotted past Rigby into the bottom corner for 2-1.

However, Brig regained their two-goal advantage with four minutes left of the half as a nicely worked play saw Boyd back heel into the path of Alistair Waddecar who twisted through the defence before slotting past Roberts for 3-1.

The first chance of the second half saw Boyd's shot from range deflected for a corner before James Barrigan drew a low save from the edge of the area. United went close to cutting the gap for a second time as a superb piece of skill from Bakkor on the touchline saw him advance on goal and force a diving stop from Rigby who had to save low minutes later from Davies' effort.

United's comeback hopes suffered a blow on the hour mark as Bevan Burey was dismissed for a second bookable offence, one which looked no worse than earlier challenges which had gone unpunished. Matt Lawlor swept over the free-kick which Roberts saved.
After being fouled on the run, Bakkor swept the resulting free-kick over the bar before clipping a shot over the bar later on. Brig went achingly close to a fourth as a clever cross from the left saw Matt Dudley's header across goal cannon back off the post.

The final whistle sounded leaving United with a defeat in the final home game of the season while Brig boosted their hopes of fourth spot.
