United Make A Point At Glossop
United claimed their first point of the season with a goalless draw at Glossop North End. The 0-0 scoreline was far from a dull stalemate with both sides having a flurry of chances over the 90 minutes.
Dave Powell welcomed the duo of Danny McLoughlin and Scott Moloney into the matchday squad while Dave Moore, Kyle Hawley and last-weeks stand in 'keeper Jack Fleming were promoted to the starting 11 which included Terry Smith after his dismissal at Ath Colls was successfully appealled.
An early effort for GNE saw Darrhyl Mason hit an acrobatic shot over the bar after Danny Pemberton's flick-on while at the other end, Dave Moore's headed was flicked past the post by Kyle Hawley.
Will Beasley went close for the hosts with a free-kick narrowly passing the post while Hawley beat Russ Saunders with a chip but saw his shot go over the bar.
United's best chances saw Paul Ennis' low shot beating Saunders but creeping achingly past the post before Kevin Edgar was denied by Saunders with both Hawley and Ennis' follow-ups blocked by the defence.
GNE came close to opening the scoring early in the second half as Darren McKnight's free-kick drew a low save from Terry Smith. McKnight tried his luck from distance later in the half with his shot saiing past the upright.
A strong effort from GNE captain Matty Russell stung the hands of Smith who showe great reactions with the reobund. United should have gone ahead with a few minutes remaining as a clever move saw Edgar, Ennis and substitute Sean Yeldrem combine to find Moore who fired wide but had he spotted Edgar, the striker would have been in on goal with just Saunders to beat.
The final minute of added time saw United almost gifting the win to the hosts as an attempted clearance crept past an open goal but the final whistle ensured a first point on the board for United.
