Runcorn Town 0 Skelmersdale United 0

After a narrow defeat to open the month, United claimed a hard fought point in a goalless draw at Runcorn Town.
Both sides went into the game in mixed form with Paul McNally made a two changes from last weekend with Cameron Glennon and Joel Douglas coming in for Marvin Molyneux and Edward Toner.

A quiet start for both sides saw the first danger come from the hosts as Dave Forbes swept over a cross which to the relief of United evaded all comers. United's first chance came after a superb wing run and cut inside from Alex Griffiths saw his shot cannon off Marcus James in the home defence. The resulting throw-in led to Matthew Coughlan shooting over the target.

Town went achingly close to opening the scoring on 15 minutes as Craig Cairns beat the offside trap to advance on goal and though he beat Ben Barnes from an angle, his shot cannoned off the crossbar and out of play. Tom Croughan sent a shot over the bar before Richard Brodie drew a low save from Adam Reid from close range,

A clever flick and shot from Peter Moore sailed wide of the target before he sent a shot wide of the far post. Forbes tried his luck from an angle at the other end with a shot over the target. Joel Douglas set up a great chance for United as he shook off several challenges to advanced on goal and pick out Moore who forced a superb aerial save from Reid from close range.

Joe Holt went close to putting Town ahead on 36 minutes as he forced a low save from Barnes from a tight angle with the ball needing a touch as it flew across goal before minutes later Cairns tested Barnes from close range .

Both sides continued to try ad break the deadlock with Cam Glennon hitting over and Brodie drawing a save from Reid for United while Holt and George Webster both went close at the other end before the interval.

The second half could have began perfectly for United as a counter attack saw Moore advance on goal and curl an effort over the bar when he had great support in Coughlan. A counter at the other end saw Cairns squaring to Forbes who sent a shot past the target. Town then had a great chance to score as Holt's free-kick found the head of Marcus James who forced a superb acrobatic save from Barnes.

Alex Griffiths tried his luck after a square pass from Tom Croughan but could only fire over the bar with Croughan repeating the feat minutes later. Town's response saw Cairns finding Holt on the run but the midfielder's effort drifted narrowly past the post. As the game entered the final moments, United had the reflexes of Barnes to thank as he stunningly saved a Forbes header that looked goalbound.

That proved to be the final chance to trouble the scoreline with the referee calling full time a minute or so later with both sides claiming a point apiece and in doing so both ending recent losing runs.
