SKELMERSDALE UNITED 2 RYLANDS 3

After a superb comeback on Saturday, Tuesday night saw narrow 3-2 defeat to promotion chasing Rylands for United at JMO Sports Park.

Paul McNally welcomed Alex Davies and Tom Croughan into the lineup with Richard Brodie and Khalil Osi-Efa dropping to the bench. The first chance of the evening went to the visitors with Lewis Buckley slotting the ball past the far post before United opened the scoring in gthe 16th minute. A corner from Emini Adegbenro found the head of captain Jordan Tyrer who guided the ball past Michael Emery into the net for 1-0.

The lead was to last just six minutes as United gifted Rylands an equaliser, Cameron Glennon felling Elliot Morris who had cut inside from a run and the referee pointed to the spot, Lewis Buckley stepping up to send Ben Barnes the wrong way for 1-1.

United could have regained the lead a few minutes later as an angled cross from Alex Davies was met by Adegbenro but he could only head across goal past the post. At the other end, Morris sent a shot past the near post for Rylands and from there both sides seemed to cancel each other out until deep in added time at the end of half as Rylands edged ahead.

A corner from Morris looked to take a flick-on from Kane Drummond and cross the line but on replay, United captain Tyrer had the unfortunate final touch for 2-1.

The second half saw start the brighter with a curling cross from Alex Griffiths achingly beating the run of Tom Croughan a few yards from goal and on 50 minutes, United drew level. A corner from Callum Preston cannoned off Gary Kenny into the path of Glennon who found Jason Carey, Carey chested the ball and with an acrobatic effort flicked the ball past Emery for 2-2.

Rylands' response saw Morris firing over the target before Croughan did similar with a cross at the other end and there were later appeals for a second Rylands penalty with the result being a booking for Drummond for a dive, proven on replay. United had the ball in the net on the hour mark but were denied the lead as Adegbenro had 'passed the ball from the corner to himself' before slotting passed Emery.

Rylands replied on 72 minutes with an effort from Drummond going past the near post before United went even closer three minutes later, a long-range shot from Jack Grimshaw stung Emery's palms and the ball fell to substitute Richard Brodie who could only cannon the ball off the bar.

The visitors alike their opener benefited from an error by Glennon who in attempting to clear a cross headed the ball against his own post forcing Barnes to try and deny a goal but in parrying, could only set-up a tap-in for substitute Sam O'Halleron on 82 minutes who made it 3-2.

As the match entered added time, a great chance came from Tyrer who forced a fingertip save from Emery after connecting to Preston's free-kick. United will feel agrieved not to have been awarded a penalty of their own late on as Brodie was clearly upended by Emery with the officials waving away the appeals as United slipped to a second consecutive home loss, both undeserved overall.
