Padiham 2 Skelmersdale United 4

After opening the new year in a five-goal thriller at JMO Sports Park, Padiham and Skelmersdale United went one better at the Ruby Civil Arena on Saturday with United overturning a two-goal defcit to win 4-2.
Paul McNally handed an instant debut to newly signed Callum Preston after Daniel Murphy's late withdrawal due to illness and not only was it an uphill battle for United but one made tougher by a strong wind which made its mark twice early on.
A quickly taken corner from the hosts saw Ellis Hancox's header flicked towards goal by Sean Ince who couldn't believe his luck as the save from Ben Barnes cannoned off the bar and over the line with the aid of the blowing wind for 1-0.
United could barely draw breath as within a minute of the opener they were 2-0 down, a sweeping cross from Luke Noble drew a diving parry from Barnes who was then helpless as Dominic Craig slotted in from close range.
The response from United began with Jack Grimshaw's low shot saved by Matthew Holmes before Noble sent a shot over the bar at the other end. United's bese to reduces the defecit saw Alex Griffiths and Emini Adegbenro combining in the six-yard box to tee up Jason Carey who blazed a shot over the bar.
United took under a minute from that chance to cut the gap as a wing run and cross from Carey saw a headed clearance fall to Khalil Osi-Efa, he slipped a pass to Grimshaw who picked his spot with a shot which wrongfooted Holmes and make it 2-1 on 18 minutes.
Alike the earlier goal, United came close to benefitting from a clearance yet again as Callum Preston's cross saw a defensive flick-on reaching Carey who drew an acrobatic stop from Holmes. At the other end, Padiham should have regained a two-goal lead as Noble's sliding cross beat Barnes but found no connecting player to tap into an empty net.
The second half saw United level at 2-2 within two minutes of the rest, Alex Griffiths' angled cross forced Holmes to try and tip over the bar but his fingertip save fell kindly for Adgebenro to fire in at the far post.
A succession of chances for United saw Jordan Tyrer, Preston, Osi-Efa and Adegbenro all forcing saves from Holmes from varying distances. Padiham went close themselves with a wing run and cut inside from Craig resutling in him finding Noble who dragged a shot narrowly past the far post before Craig himself forced Barnes into a crucial save at his near post minutes later.
United tried their luck with a cross from Carey finding Richard Brodie in front of goal but good pressure from the home defence prevented a shot. The hosts had the ball in the net for a third time on 75 minutes with Noble slotting past Barnes but it was chalked off due to offside.
The United comeback was complete on 84 minutes as a long range free-kick from Osi-Efa found the head of Ben Stanton whose header into the ground looked to be bouncing nicely for Tyrer to try his luck at goal but he was denied by defender Ellis Hancox who connected and slotted past Holmes into his own net for 3-2.
After the two shared five goals in the reverse meeting with United claiming a 3-2 win late on, this time around it was another spectacular ending as United opened up a 4-2 lead in the 90th minute with a stunning effort. A curled clearance from Holmes fell to Carey on the touchline and he let fly from almost 40 yards with the ball sailing over the backpedaling Holmes into the net to the joy of the travelling fans.
The final whistle minutes later was greeted by similar joy from the United contingent as they wrapped up a double over the Storks and registered a first away win since the 5-0 triumph at Winsford in late November.
A huge week for United ahead as they welcome high flying duo Rylands and Irlam to JMO Sports Park with both hopefully well attended by the United fans.
