WASHED OUT AT IRLAM
Irlam 1-0 Skelmersdale United
Skelmersdale United suffered their first defeat in 6 games as they went down 1-0 at Irlam on Tuesday night.
With a heavy game in their legs from Saturday and a pitch that had torrential rain all day that was not conducive of United’s crisp passing style, it was always going to be a tough ask against a Irlam side who have won 4 of their last 5 games.
Things started badly when after just 14 minutes, the referee pointing to the spot, Pollitt was adjudged to have been nudged in the box, Bardsley-Rowe stepped up and duly delivered the telling blow. There was an instant reply from Skem as MinI Adegbenro went close and Tom Croughan just failed to get on to a pass across the goalmouth.
It could have been two for Irlam on 36 minutes, a ball across the box found Pollitt with an open goal, but despite being just two yards out all he could do was chip into the grateful arms of keeper Barnes.
Right on the stroke of half time a vicious shot from the edge of the box from Kevin Towey was charged down by a brave defender, stopping a certain goal.
The closest anyone came to troubling the scorers in the second half was a Joe Herbert header that was smartly saved, Mikey Howard had a great chance to level the scores as the game reached its final minutes but was kept out by a smart save from keeper Lee White who was named Man of the Match, with the heavy rainfall it was a frustrating night for both sides.
United will feel they did enough to get at least a share of the spoils, Manager Paul McNally was not to disheartened “It was a tough game after Saturday, with a bit of luck we could have had three points, these results are bound to happen, we are still in the mix and there is still a long way to go”
