Slade Point Juniors
Although junior rugby has been played in Mackay on a small scale since the early 1990s junior club rugby didn't formally commence until 2001. Slade Point Juniors are one of the founding clubs commencing at this time.
In 2001 only "Pathways" rugby was played that is, walla (under 6/7/8s), mini (under 10s) and midi (under 12s) rugby. Today there is junior rugby in 6 main age groups under 8s (walla - two handed tag), under 10s, under 12s, under 14s, under 16s and under 18s. Modified rules apply to the various age divisions and these are ARU sanctioned. Junior rugby in Mackay is played in two year age brackets ie children aged 11 and 12 play together etc.
Over recent years some age clubs have been struggling with player/team numbers and it is not uncommon to combine junior clubs to ensure all children get a game. Girls and boys can play together until age 12 (midi level). SP Juniors aim to have a team in every age division with an emphasis on fun, fitness and developing skills rather than a win at all costs attitude.
Slade Point Juniors have been successful in many divisions however our under 16s have won the premiership for the last 4 years running. Volunteers are the backbone of any club and we are always chasing those willing to assist be it in a small or big way (team managers to committee).
We have had some long term sponsors that deserve mentioning namely, Eyes R Us, Brown & Bird Accountants, Traks Mini Mart and Allphones. Please support these businesses wherever possible.
In 2012 the junior season is to commence in mid July finalising in September. The aim of this shorten season is to provide the children of Mackay to rugby union but not compete with Mackay's very successful secondary schools competition (April to June). Mackay Junior Rugby are also commencing a primary schools competition from 2010.
